Should a security tool offer a free trial or freemium plan?

Self-serve trials suit security tools that a developer or IT generalist can set up alone. Enterprise buyers usually want a guided evaluation. This page helps you choose between a trial, a freemium plan and a proof of value, design a trial that shows value quickly, and avoid pricing mistakes when trial users convert.

Should a security tool offer a free trial or freemium plan?

Should a security tool offer a free trial or freemium plan?

Offer one when a single user can install the tool, connect it safely and see value without a committee: developer security tools, email and identity checks for small teams, scanners and awareness training for small organizations. When deployment needs agents across many machines, change approvals or several teams, a structured proof of value usually works better.

ShoutEx view: many security companies add a trial because PLG is fashionable, then find most sign-ups never connect anything. A trial is a product experience, not a form. If you cannot make setup safe and quick, a guided evaluation or an ungated product tour may serve buyers better. How trials sit alongside demos on your site is covered in the website and demo page, and free trial vs demo explains the general trade-off for SaaS.

Trial, freemium or proof of value: which fits?

Choose by who sets up the product and who decides to pay.

ModelFits whenWatch out forExample
Free trial (time-limited)One person can set up and judge value in daysUsers who sign up and never connect anythingEmail security for a 50-person firm
Freemium (free forever tier)Individual developers or small teams use it daily; paid tier adds scale or teamsFree users who never need the paid featuresCode scanning for open-source projects
Proof of value (guided)Deployment needs approvals, agents or several teamsLong evaluations without agreed criteriaEndpoint detection for a hospital
Free tool, then salesA useful single-purpose check opens a conversationTool users who are students or researchersExternal attack-surface scan

Free tools differ from trials: they give one useful result rather than access to the product. Free security tools covers that model. If your buyers are mostly enterprise, the evaluation method in marketing a security product is the better starting point.

How do you design a security trial that converts?

Design the trial backwards from the first useful finding.

  1. Keep connections safe. Start with read-only permissions and say exactly what the tool can access.
  2. Reach a finding fast. For Signalpine, a fictional email security tool, that means scanning the last 30 days of mail on connect, not waiting for new mail.
  3. Provide sample data. If the user's environment is quiet, show findings from a realistic demo tenant so they can judge alert quality.
  4. Explain each finding. What happened, why it matters and what to do, in plain language.
  5. Invite a colleague. Most security purchases need a second person; make sharing a finding easy.
  6. End with a clear choice. Before the trial expires, show what they will lose, what the paid plan costs and who to talk to.

Security trials carry a trust problem other SaaS trials do not: you are asking a stranger for access to mailboxes, code or cloud accounts. Answer that on the sign-up page itself. State the permissions requested, where trial data is stored, how long it is kept after the trial ends and how to delete it. Link to your security documentation and trust centre from the same screen. An engineer who has to hunt for those answers will often close the tab rather than grant access.

Decide too what happens to findings when a trial lapses. Keeping a read-only summary for 30 days gives a returning user a reason to come back and a sales engineer something concrete to discuss. Deleting everything on day one is cleaner for privacy but loses that thread; say clearly which approach you take.

How do cloud marketplace free trials work?

Marketplace trials let a buyer test through an account their company already uses, and convert without new supplier paperwork. On AWS Marketplace, SaaS free trials run from 7 to 90 days, each AWS account gets one free trial per product, and each SaaS product can have one public free trial offer.

Use the same activation design as your direct trial, and make sure trial users can reach your support team. Marketplace fees, private offers and other platforms are compared in partners and cloud marketplaces.

ShoutEx rule

Time to first finding is the metric that matters.

If a trial user does not see something real about their own environment in the first session, they rarely come back. Design everything around that moment.

How should a trial show the price buyers will pay?

Show the full price, including any mandatory fees, from the first page. The Competition Bureau announced in June 2024 that SiriusXM Canada would pay a $3.3 million penalty, plus $30,000 in costs, over subscription prices that a mandatory "Music Royalty and Administrative Fee" raised by 10% to 20%. The prices appeared on its website, in emails and in direct mail.

For a security SaaS company, the lesson is practical: if every customer must pay a platform fee, onboarding fee or required support plan, the advertised monthly price and the trial-to-paid price must include it. Taxes imposed by law can be shown separately. Keep the trial page, the upgrade screen and the renewal email consistent. This is general information, not legal advice; check with counsel.

When should a person step into a self-serve trial?

When usage shows a buyer, not just a user. ShoutEx view: route trials to sales or a solutions engineer on signals like these:

  • Company size or domain matches your target accounts.
  • The user connects a production environment, not a test one.
  • A second or third colleague joins the trial.
  • The user views pricing, the security documentation or the trust centre.
  • Findings are high severity, so there is a real problem to discuss.

Make the first contact useful: an engineer offering to explain a finding, not a rep asking about budget.

Which trial metrics matter for security tools?

Measure activation and conversion, not sign-ups.

Track time from sign-up to first finding as closely as conversion. If that time grows, conversion will follow it down.

Frequently asked questions

Should every security product offer a free trial?

No. Trials suit tools one person can set up and judge. Products that need agents, approvals or several teams usually do better with a structured proof of value.

What is the difference between freemium and a free trial?

A free trial gives full or near-full access for a limited time. Freemium gives a limited plan for free indefinitely, with paid tiers for more scale or features.

How long should a security tool trial be?

Long enough to reach a first finding and share it with a colleague. Many tools need 14 days or less; on AWS Marketplace trials can be 7 to 90 days.

Can a buyer take more than one AWS Marketplace trial of our product?

AWS allows one free trial per product per AWS account, and one public free trial offer per SaaS product.

Do we have to show mandatory fees in our trial pricing?

Yes. Advertised prices should include fees every customer must pay, other than those imposed by law. The SiriusXM Canada penalty shows the risk of leaving them out.

Should trial sign-up require a credit card?

For security tools sold to businesses, usually not. A card requirement cuts sign-ups from evaluators who cannot pay personally. Qualify by work email and usage instead.

When should sales contact a trial user?

When usage signals a real buyer, such as a production connection, several colleagues joining, or visits to pricing and security documents.
