Account-Based Marketing (ABM) for SaaS

Account-based marketing focuses marketing and sales on a named list of companies. It works when you know exactly who you want and each deal is worth the effort.

When does account-based marketing make sense for SaaS?

Account-based marketing (ABM) makes sense when you can name the companies you want to sell to, each deal is large enough to justify coordinated effort, and several people inside each company influence the decision. It suits contract values from the tens of thousands upward, not low-priced self-serve products.

ABM is not a separate strategy. It is a way of running demand generation for a defined list, built on the ideal customer profile.

How do you select target accounts?

Select target accounts by filtering your total market with the ICP criteria, then ranking by signals that suggest timing: hiring in the relevant team, funding, a leadership change, or use of a complementary tool. Start with a list sales agrees to work, sized to what the team can cover.

TierAccountsTreatment
Tier 110 to 30Research per account, tailored outreach and content
Tier 250 to 150Tailored by segment or industry
Tier 3150 to 500Programmatic ads and sequences by segment

How do you reach the buying committee?

Reach the buying committee by mapping the roles involved in each target account, the economic buyer, the user, the technical evaluator and the likely blocker, and giving each a reason to engage. Sales and marketing coordinate who contacts whom, with what, and in what order.

Outreach combines sales emails and calls, LinkedIn connection and messaging, relevant content, events and ads. The same account should see a consistent story from each channel, not five unrelated messages.

Where do LinkedIn Ads fit in ABM?

LinkedIn Ads fit in ABM as one tactic: showing ads to people at your target accounts, filtered by job title or function, so they recognize you before sales reaches out. You can upload your account list and target it directly; LinkedIn lists the requirements for company targeting lists.

Combine company lists with LinkedIn’s targeting options such as job function and seniority. Judge the ads on account engagement and meetings in target accounts, not on cost per click or form fills.

Founder rule

One list, owned by both teams.

Marketing and sales must work from the same account list and meet weekly about it. Without that, it is just targeted advertising.

How do you measure ABM?

Measure ABM at the account level: the share of target accounts engaged, meetings held, opportunities created, pipeline value and win rate, compared with accounts outside the program. Lead counts are the wrong measure, because ABM aims to move a few accounts, not collect many contacts.

Review the list every quarter. Remove accounts that show no engagement after two full cycles, and add new ones with fresh signals. The enterprise marketing guide covers longer cycles.

Frequently asked questions

What is account-based marketing?

A way of focusing marketing and sales on a named list of target companies, with coordinated outreach to the people involved in the decision.

How many accounts should an ABM program have?

As many as the team can cover well. For a small team, that is often 50 to 300 across tiers.

Do I need an ABM platform?

Not at first. A CRM, a shared list, LinkedIn and good coordination are enough to start.

Are LinkedIn Ads necessary for ABM?

No, but they are a useful way to reach named accounts by role. They support sales outreach rather than replace it.

How long does ABM take to show results?

About one sales cycle for opportunities. Engagement can show within weeks.

How is ABM different from outbound sales?

Outbound is one part of it. ABM coordinates sales, ads, content and events around the same accounts.
