What should a SaaS company track?

A SaaS company should track every step from ad click to closed deal: demo requests and trial sign-ups on the site, then sales-qualified leads, opportunities and closed-won deals from the CRM. Mark the stages that reflect real buying intent as primary conversions, and keep softer actions as secondary so they are visible but not bid on.

OpportunityCRM import, with a valuePrimary for value-based bidding
Closed-wonCRM import, with revenueReporting, and bidding if volume allows

How do you set up tracking correctly?

Set up tracking with the Google tag on every page, one conversion action per form event, enhanced conversions turned on, and a hidden field on every form that stores the Google click ID. Then submit a test form and confirm the conversion appears in Google Ads and the click ID appears in the CRM.

Enhanced conversions sends hashed first-party data such as email addresses with the conversion, which improves matching when cookies are missing. If Google Ads and your CRM later disagree, our troubleshooting page on why the numbers differ covers each cause.

How do you import CRM stages into Google Ads?

Import CRM stages by capturing the click ID or the lead’s email with every form fill, then sending each stage back to Google Ads when the lead reaches it, through a native HubSpot or Salesforce integration, Google’s Data Manager, or a scheduled upload. Give each stage a value so bidding can tell an opportunity from a form fill.

Upload at least weekly so bidding sees results while they are still recent. The page on leads that never become customers shows why this matters, and the bidding strategies guide shows how to use the stages once they arrive.

Founder rule

If the CRM can't see the click, the channel can't be judged.

Capture the click ID on every form and import qualified stages back. Without it, every budget decision is a guess.

Frequently asked questions

What conversions should a SaaS company track in Google Ads?

Demo requests and trial sign-ups on the site, then SQLs, opportunities and closed-won deals imported from the CRM. Keep downloads and newsletter sign-ups as secondary.

Should I import conversions from GA4 or use the Google tag?

Use the Google tag for the conversions you bid on, because it is designed for Google Ads measurement. Use GA4 imports for secondary reporting, and never count the same action twice.

What are enhanced conversions?

A Google Ads feature that sends hashed first-party data, such as an email address, with a conversion to improve matching when cookies are missing.

How do I import HubSpot or Salesforce data into Google Ads?

Capture the click ID or email on every form, then send lifecycle stages back through the native integration, Google’s Data Manager or scheduled uploads.

What is Consent Mode and do I need it?

Consent mode adjusts Google tags to each visitor’s cookie choice and models some unobserved conversions. You likely need it if you use a consent banner. Confirm your obligations with counsel.

How often should CRM stages be uploaded to Google Ads?

At least weekly, and daily if you can. Bidding learns faster from recent results.
