How to Update Old SaaS Content for SEO

Most SaaS blogs have more old pages than new ones. Updating the right ones is often the fastest SEO win, because Google already knows them.

Question to ask first: does this page still help a buyer?

How do you refresh old content for SEO?

Compare each page’s clicks in Search Console over the last 12 months with the 12 before, list pages that declined or sit on page two, and decide for each: update it, merge it into a stronger page, or remove it. Update facts, screenshots, examples and the answer near the top, then request indexing.

How do you decide what to do with each page?

Decide by asking whether the page still targets a search that matters and still helps the reader. Pages that do get updated; overlapping pages get merged; pages with no value and no traffic get removed or redirected to the closest relevant page.

Declining traffic, topic still mattersUpdate facts, examples and structure
On page two for a valuable searchImprove the answer and add internal links
Two pages targeting the same searchMerge into the stronger page and 301 redirect the other
Outdated product or featureRewrite for the current product, or redirect
No traffic, no links, no valueRemove, or redirect to a relevant page

What should you change on the page?

Change what a buyer would notice is out of date, and what makes the answer clearer: the first paragraph, facts and prices, screenshots, examples and dates. Google’s guidance warns against changing dates without real updates, and against deleting content hastily; it lists rewriting and restructuring as better options (helpful content guidance).

  • Put the direct answer in the first paragraph.
  • Update facts, prices, screenshots and product names.
  • Add examples from real customers or your own data.
  • Link to newer related pages, and link to this page from them.
  • Update the date only when the content really changed.

Can you use AI to refresh content?

You can use AI to find outdated sections, suggest structure and draft updates, but a person who knows the product should check every fact and add the expertise. Google says generative AI can help with research and structure, and that mass-producing pages without value can break its spam policies (Google on generative AI content).

Founder rule

Maintain before you publish.

A site with 200 current pages beats one with 500 stale ones. Budget time for updates the same way you budget for new content.

How often should you review content?

Review your top 20 pages by pipeline every quarter and the rest once a year. Anything with prices, screenshots or competitor facts needs a quarterly check because those change fastest. Put the review dates in the content calendar.

Finding declining pages is covered in why organic traffic dropped. The editorial process belongs in B2B Content Marketing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find content to refresh?

Compare Search Console clicks for the last 12 months with the previous 12 and list pages that declined or sit on page two.

Should I delete old blog posts?

Only if they have no value, traffic or links. Google calls deleting content a last resort; merging or redirecting is often better.

Does updating the date help SEO?

Not on its own. Update the date only when the content really changed.

How often should SaaS content be updated?

Top pages quarterly, the rest yearly, and anything with prices or competitor facts quarterly.

Can I use AI to update content?

For drafting and structure, yes, with an expert checking every fact and adding real experience.

Should I change the URL when I update a page?

No. Keep the URL. If you must change it, use a 301 redirect.
