How to Migrate from Drupal to WordPress
Drupal sites are usually more structured than WordPress sites, so the migration effort depends on how much structure you have to recreate. Content types, fields, permissions and integrations all need a WordPress equivalent. Assess those first, then plan the move.

Should you migrate from Drupal to WordPress?
Migrate when your team finds Drupal hard to staff or maintain, and the site no longer needs Drupal’s complex permissions, multi-site or content relationships. Stay if those features are central. Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026, according to the Drupal release schedule, so many teams are choosing now between upgrading and moving.
The trade-offs are covered in Drupal vs WordPress.
How do you assess the content model?
List every content type, its fields and how it relates to others. Simple types such as articles and basic pages map directly to WordPress posts and pages. Types with many fields or references need custom post types and field plugins. The more of these you have, the larger the migration.
| Drupal content type | WordPress equivalent | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Article | Post | Low |
| Basic page | Page | Low |
| Case study with 12 fields | Custom post type + fields | Medium |
| Product with references to integrations | Custom post types + relationship fields | High |
| Views (lists and filters) | Query blocks or custom templates | Medium to high |
What about users, roles and permissions?
Drupal permissions are often more detailed than WordPress roles. List each role and what it can do, then decide whether WordPress’s default roles cover it or a plugin is needed. Editorial workflows, such as draft, review and publish, may also need a plugin.
- Map each Drupal role to a WordPress role.
- Note content that is restricted to logged-in users.
- Decide whether to migrate user accounts or re-invite users.
- Check single sign-on needs before choosing plugins.
Which features need rebuilding?
Content usually moves with an importer. The free FG Drupal to WordPress plugin moves articles, pages, categories, tags and images, and its premium version adds users, comments, custom post types, taxonomies, fields, redirects and multilingual content. Views, custom modules, integrations and the theme need rebuilding.
| Drupal feature | WordPress approach |
|---|---|
| Views | Query loop blocks or custom templates |
| Custom modules | Plugins or custom code |
| Webforms | Form plugin connected to your CRM |
| Multilingual | Multilingual plugin |
| Search API | Search plugin or hosted search |
| Theme | New theme or block theme |
Simplify before you move.
Retire content types and features nobody uses before migrating. Every one you keep costs time to rebuild.
How do you plan URLs and launch?
Map every Drupal path, including aliases and node IDs, to a new WordPress URL in the URL-mapping template. Google’s site move guidance says it can take a few weeks or more for new URLs to replace old ones on a medium-sized site, so keep redirects for at least a year and watch Search Console weekly.
Use the website migration SEO checklist for launch, and compare with the Joomla migration steps if you run both platforms.
Frequently asked questions
How hard is it to migrate from Drupal to WordPress?
It depends on content types, fields, views and custom modules. Simple sites move easily; structured sites need custom post types and rebuilt features.
Is there a plugin to migrate Drupal to WordPress?
Yes. FG Drupal to WordPress moves core content for free and adds custom types, users, fields and redirects in its premium version.
Should I upgrade Drupal or move to WordPress?
Upgrade if you rely on Drupal’s structure and have developers. Move if the site is mostly pages and posts and Drupal is hard to staff.
When does Drupal 10 reach end of life?
December 9, 2026, according to Drupal.org.
Will I lose search traffic?
Some short-term movement is normal. A complete URL map with 301 redirects limits the loss.

They are rebuilt as WordPress query blocks, templates or plugins.
