Add five lines: one-time design and build, platform or hosting fees, seats and apps, monthly maintenance, and content. Platform fees for a marketing site are often a few hundred dollars a year. Design, build and content hours are usually the largest cost. Compare platforms on a three-year total, not the monthly fee.

How do you estimate three years of cost?

Multiply build hours by your rate, add 36 months of platform, seat and app fees, then add maintenance hours per month times 36. Content is the same on every platform, so keep it as a separate line. The worked example below shows the structure; enter your own figures in the startup website cost worksheet.

Which costs do founders miss?

  • Seats: visual builders charge per designer; count everyone who edits layouts.
  • Localization: add-ons or plugins per language, plus translation.
  • Migration: URL mapping, redirects and testing; see the migration checklist.
  • Renewals: first-term promotions on some builders.
  • Maintenance: self-hosted WordPress and Drupal need regular updates.
  • Content: the site launches with what you write; budget for it.
Founder rule

Compare three-year totals.

Monthly fees hide build, seat and maintenance costs that decide the real price.

How should cost affect the platform choice?

Use cost to break ties, not to pick the cheapest plan. A platform your team cannot update will cost more in delays than it saves in fees. Put the three-year total into the decision matrix as one criterion, and see the main guide for fit by stage and team. Design-led teams should also read Framer vs Webflow.
