AI Search vs SEO: What Changes for SaaS

AI search builds on the same web that SEO does. The foundations still matter; what changes is how answers are assembled, how buyers compare you, and how you measure it.

How is AI search different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page for a query so people click it. AI search assembles an answer from several sources, so the goal becomes being named, cited and described correctly inside that answer. Indexing, crawlability and useful content still decide whether you can be used at all. Clicks and rankings matter less as the only measure.

Which SEO foundations still affect AI visibility?

The SEO foundations that still affect AI visibility are the ones that let a page be found, crawled and trusted: indexing, crawl access, clear page structure, and a reputation built from other sites. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet in Search (AI features and your website).

Keyword research, technical SEO and link building are covered in the SEO for SaaS guide. This guide covers where those foundations change what AI answers say about you.

What changes when AI writes the answer?

Three things change. Buyers ask longer, more specific questions, often comparing named vendors. Answers pull facts from several pages, so a clear pricing table can matter more than a long article. And other sites describe you: reviews, forums and comparisons often shape the answer as much as your own pages.

Do AI answers still send traffic?

AI answers send less traffic per search than classic results. Pew Research found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits ({X(U['pew'], 'Pew Research study')}). Similarweb measured US AI platform visits up 28.6% in a year while referrals out to other sites stayed flat.

Founder rule

Fix the foundations before chasing the new thing.

Most AI visibility problems in B2B SaaS are old problems: pages that aren’t indexed, facts that aren’t written down, and no one else talking about you.

Where should a SaaS team spend its time?

Spend time first on the foundations that serve both: indexable pages, clear facts on pricing, integrations and fit, and honest comparison pages. Then add the AI-specific work: a repeated prompt sample, fixing inaccurate descriptions, and earning mentions on the review sites and communities AI answers cite in your category.

Writing pages that get cited is covered in content AI search engines cite. Earning mentions elsewhere is in getting mentioned in AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI search?

No. AI answers draw on indexed, crawlable pages, so SEO foundations are the entry ticket. What changes is how you measure success.

Do I need a separate AI search strategy?

You need a few extra habits, like tracking prompts and fixing inaccurate descriptions, built on the same content and site foundations.

Does ranking first in Google mean I’ll appear in AI answers?

Not always. Studies find AI answers often cite pages outside the top results, and they draw on other sites that mention you.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Pew Research found users clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one, in March 2025.

Does Google require special markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special schema, AI text files or markup are needed beyond normal Search eligibility.

Where do keyword research and link building fit?

They belong to classic SEO and are covered in our SEO for SaaS guide. They help AI visibility by making pages findable and trusted.
