ChatGPT Ads Cost and Minimum Budget
OpenAI publishes how ChatGPT Ads are bought and the minimum budget, but not what clicks or impressions typically cost. Here is what is known and how to size a test without guessing.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
ChatGPT Ads have no fixed price. You set a budget and a bid, and pay per thousand impressions, per click, or through conversion-optimized bidding charged by click or impression. The minimum daily budget in Ads Manager is US$25 for USD accounts. OpenAI does not publish average costs, so your own first weeks are the only reliable benchmark.
Confirmed: the goals and minimum budgets are listed in OpenAI’s guide to creating campaigns, with minimums in more than 30 currencies. Check it for your account currency.
What are the buying options?
Ads Manager offers three campaign goals: views, billed per thousand impressions; clicks, billed per click; and conversions, which optimizes for an action on your site and bills by click or by impression. Large advertisers can also buy through agency partners. For B2B lead generation, clicks or conversions usually make more sense than views.
| Goal | You pay for | Status | When it fits B2B SaaS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Views | 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Confirmed | Awareness tests; hard to judge on pipeline |
| Clicks | Each valid click (CPC) | Confirmed | First tests, before conversion tracking has data |
| Conversions | Clicks or impressions, optimized to a conversion event | Confirmed | Once the pixel or Conversions API records leads reliably |
OpenAI announced self-serve buying and agency partners in new ways to buy ChatGPT ads. The default bid strategy for new ad groups is Maximize results, with manual bid controls available.
How do daily and total budgets work?
Ads Manager supports a daily budget or a total budget for the campaign. A daily budget is an average: spend on a single day can reach up to twice the daily amount, and weekly spend up to seven times it. A total budget caps spend across the whole campaign, which suits a fixed-length test.
For a test, a campaign total budget with fixed start and end dates is the simplest way to guarantee you spend exactly what you planned.
How should you size a B2B test budget?
Size the test from the number of leads you need to judge quality, not from the minimum. Decide how many leads sales must review, divide by your expected click-to-lead rate, then multiply by the cost per click you see in the first two weeks. Recalculate once real costs arrive.
| Cost per click (hypothetical) | Clicks needed | Test budget | Daily budget over 8 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2 | 1,000 | $2,000 | $36 |
| $5 | 1,000 | $5,000 | $89 |
| $10 | 1,000 | $10,000 | $179 |
The same method is used in our Google Ads calculator, which you can use with ChatGPT Ads costs once you have them.
Budget for a verdict, not for the minimum.
A test that meets the US$25 daily minimum but never produces enough leads to judge is money spent without an answer.
