How to Measure ChatGPT Ads Leads and Pipeline
Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend and conversions. Pipeline lives in your CRM. Here is how to connect them, and where attribution stops being reliable.
How do you measure ChatGPT Ads leads and pipeline?
Measure ChatGPT Ads in two layers: Ads Manager for delivery and platform conversions, and your CRM for what happens next. Track leads with the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, tag every lead with UTM parameters and the ad group, then report sales-qualified leads, meetings, opportunities and revenue from the CRM by campaign.
Confirmed: Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions, with click-through windows of 7, 14 or 30 days and view-through of none or one day, according to measure results.
What does the platform measure?
The platform measures delivery and conversions it can attribute: the pixel records actions on your site, the Conversions API sends events from your server, and using both with a shared event ID lets OpenAI deduplicate them. Conversions can include modelled results and take 24 to 48 hours to appear.
OpenAI explains the pixel, API and click reference in conversion measurement. HubSpot users can also connect ChatGPT Ads to HubSpot to add leads to the CRM and compare channels, as set out in setting up ChatGPT Ads in HubSpot.
Which CRM stages should you report?
Report five stages from the CRM for ChatGPT Ads leads: leads, sales-qualified leads, meetings held, opportunities and closed revenue, each by campaign and ad group. Tag each lead’s outcome during the test, including spam and poor fit, so you can see which conversations bring real buyers.
| Stage | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | Pixel or Conversions API, and the CRM | The ad and page work |
| Sales-qualified lead | CRM, set by sales | The conversations reach real buyers |
| Meeting held | CRM or calendar | The offer leads to a sales conversation |
| Opportunity | CRM | The channel creates pipeline |
| Revenue | CRM, after the sales cycle | The channel pays back |
What can attribution not prove?
Attribution cannot prove that ChatGPT Ads caused a sale that might have happened anyway, and platform and CRM numbers will differ because they use different windows, dates and models. It also can’t show which conversation produced a lead, because advertisers only receive aggregated results.
To test whether the channel adds anything, run a geographic holdout where the product allows it: advertise in some regions and not others, and compare pipeline. Treat attributed conversions as a guide, and the CRM as the record.
Report the stage sales owns.
A lead counted in Ads Manager is a claim. A sales-qualified lead in the CRM is evidence. Judge the channel on evidence.
What should be in place before launch?
Before launch, put in place the pixel or Conversions API with a lead event, UTM parameters on every ad, hidden form fields that capture UTMs and the click reference, a CRM field for lead outcome, and an agreed definition of a sales-qualified lead. Then submit a test lead and follow it through.
- Install the OpenAI Pixel and, if possible, the Conversions API with shared event IDs.
- Add UTM parameters to every ad, including the ad group.
- Capture UTMs and the oppref value in hidden form fields.
- Add a lead outcome field in the CRM: spam, poor fit, qualified, opportunity.
- Submit a test lead and confirm it appears in both systems.
If leads arrive but don’t become customers, the Google Ads diagnosis for leads that never close applies to this channel too.
