Google Ads vs LinkedIn Ads for B2B SaaS
The right choice depends less on the platforms than on your market. Six questions about your search demand, buyers and budget decide it.
What is the real difference between Google Ads and LinkedIn Ads?
Google Ads reaches people by what they are searching for, so it captures demand that already exists. LinkedIn Ads reaches people by who they are: job title, seniority, company and industry, whether or not they are looking for a product today. That makes LinkedIn a way to create demand in a defined audience.
LinkedIn’s own targeting options for LinkedIn Ads list the professional attributes you can target. Google Ads has audience features too, but for most B2B SaaS accounts the search query is still the strongest signal it offers.
Which channel fits your SaaS company?
The channel that fits is the one your market can answer. If people search for your category, Google Ads can show results within weeks. If they don’t, but you can list the titles and companies you sell to, LinkedIn Ads can reach them directly. Deal size, sales cycle, creative capacity and budget decide the rest.
| Question | Start with Google Ads when… | Start with LinkedIn Ads when… |
|---|---|---|
| Is there search demand? | Buyers search for your category or problem every month | The category is new or buyers don’t know to look for it |
| Can you name the buyers? | Buyers are spread across many roles and company types | You sell to a few job titles or a defined list of accounts |
| How big is the deal? | Smaller annual contract values that need cheaper leads | Larger deals that can absorb a higher cost per lead |
| How long is the sales cycle? | Weeks, so a test reads out in a quarter | Months, with several people involved in the decision |
| Can you produce creative? | You have little design or video capacity | You can make new ads and offers every few weeks |
| What can the budget fund? | Enough clicks on high-intent terms to reach 30 conversions | Enough reach in a narrow audience to hold attention for months |
Count how many rows point each way. If five or six agree, the choice is made. If they split, read the section on running both. The guide to Google Ads for B2B SaaS covers the search-demand check in more detail.
What does the choice look like for two different companies?
Two fictional companies show how the same questions give different answers. Northwind sells sales forecasting software to small teams, a category people search for. Fabrikam sells a new compliance product to large banks, where nobody searches for the category yet and the buyers are a few hundred named people.
| Northwind (forecasting software) | Fabrikam (compliance platform) | |
|---|---|---|
| Search demand | Steady searches for the category | Almost none |
| Named buyers | Sales leaders at thousands of companies | Compliance heads at about 300 banks |
| Annual contract value | $6,000 | $90,000 |
| Sales cycle | About 30 days | 6 to 9 months |
| First channel | Google Ads | LinkedIn Ads, to a company list |
Both examples are illustrative. Northwind could add LinkedIn later to retarget visitors, and Fabrikam could add a small Google Ads campaign on its brand and a few problem terms once LinkedIn starts to create awareness.
When should you run both channels?
Run Google Ads and LinkedIn Ads together when some search demand exists, you can name the accounts you want, and the budget can take each channel to its own decision. In that setup LinkedIn introduces the product to named accounts, and Google Ads captures those people when they later search for the category or your brand.
Judge them together over a full sales cycle. A LinkedIn campaign often looks expensive per lead but raises branded search, which Google Ads then collects. Compare pipeline created per dollar across both, not cost per lead within each.
Costs, formats and set-up for the LinkedIn side are in the LinkedIn Ads guide, including benchmarks by industry.
Choose the channel that can answer fastest.
Your first paid channel should tell you within a quarter whether paid acquisition can work. Pick the one where your buyers are easiest to find and your test is cheapest to finish.
How should you split a limited budget?
Split a limited budget only if each channel still gets enough to reach a decision on its own. If the budget can fund one channel properly, fund one, learn, then add the second. Two half-funded tests usually end with two unclear answers.
Run the numbers for each channel separately in our Google Ads calculator for SaaS, using that channel’s own cost per click and conversion rates. For LinkedIn account targeting, check that your list meets LinkedIn’s requirements for company targeting lists before you plan around it. The Google Ads cost guide covers the costs beyond media spend.
Frequently asked questions
Is LinkedIn Ads better than Google Ads for B2B?
Neither is better in general. Google Ads works when buyers search for your category; LinkedIn Ads works when you can name the titles or accounts you sell to and need to reach them before they search.
Why do LinkedIn Ads cost more per click?
You pay for targeting by job title, company and seniority, which search ads cannot match directly. Compare cost per qualified opportunity, not cost per click.
Can I run LinkedIn Ads with a small budget?
Yes, if the audience is narrow, such as a list of a few hundred target accounts. A small budget spread across a broad audience rarely produces a clear result.
Should an early-stage SaaS company start with Google Ads or LinkedIn Ads?
Start with Google Ads if people already search for what you sell, because it reads out faster. Start with LinkedIn Ads if the category is new and your buyers are a defined group.
Can LinkedIn Ads and Google Ads work together?
Yes. LinkedIn introduces the product to named accounts and Google Ads captures those people when they search later. Judge the two together on pipeline over a full sales cycle.
Where does Microsoft Advertising fit?
Microsoft Advertising can import Google Ads search campaigns and adds some professional targeting in certain markets. It is usually a second search test after Google Ads works, not a replacement for LinkedIn.
