Should SaaS Companies Bid on Competitor Keywords?

Bidding on a competitor’s name can bring your best-fit buyers or burn budget on people who will never switch. Here is how to tell which before you spend much.

When are competitor keywords worth testing?

Competitor keywords are worth testing when four things are true: the competitor gets real search volume, you are clearly better for a defined group of its customers, your contract value can absorb expensive clicks, and you can show the difference honestly on a comparison page. Miss one and the test is likely to waste money.

  • Search volume. Check the competitor’s name plus “alternative”, “vs” and “pricing” in Keyword Planner. A few searches a month cannot produce a result.
  • A real reason to switch. A lower price for small teams, a feature they lack, a better fit for one industry, or an easy migration.
  • Room in the economics. People searching a competitor’s name convert at a lower rate than category searchers, so your cost per customer will be higher.
  • An honest page. You need a comparison page you would be comfortable showing the competitor.

Which competitor searches should you target?

Target the competitor searches that show someone is ready to consider an alternative: the name plus “alternative”, “vs”, “pricing” or “reviews”. The bare brand name is the weakest, because many of those searchers are existing customers looking for the login page.

SearchWho is usually searchingWorth testing?
[competitor] alternativeUnhappy customers and buyers comparing optionsYes, first
[competitor] vs [your product]Buyers who already know bothYes, and bid on your own version too
[competitor] pricingBuyers checking cost before a callYes, if you are cheaper for a segment

[competitor]Existing customers, employees, job seekersRarely, and only on exact match

Match types, negative keywords and campaign setup are covered in the Google Ads keyword research guide. Put each competitor in its own campaign so its budget and results stay separate.

What should the landing page say?

The landing page for competitor keywords should say who your product is better for, show the differences in a plain table, and explain how switching works. It should also say who should stay with the competitor. That honesty makes the rest of the page believable to someone who already knows the other product.

Use the competitor’s name on the page and as a keyword, but not in the ad text. Google’s trademark policy for ads does not restrict trademarks as keywords, but it can restrict a direct competitor’s trademark in the ad copy if the owner complains. Write headlines such as “A simpler alternative for small sales teams” instead.

Date the comparison table and keep it current. The landing page guide covers structure and forms; the difference here is the comparison table and the migration offer.

How do you judge competitor-keyword leads?

Judge competitor-keyword leads against your category campaign, over at least one full sales cycle, on sales-qualified leads, win rate and deal size. Cost per lead will look worse almost every time. What matters is whether the leads that do arrive become customers at a cost your economics can carry.

In that example the competitor campaign costs about two-thirds more per customer. It is worth keeping only if those customers are larger, churn less or come from a segment you want. Also watch for contract timing: a lead locked into a competitor contract for another year may be a real deal next year, so track it rather than calling it a failure.

Founder rule

Only bid on competitors you can honestly beat for someone.

If you can’t say in one sentence who should switch and why, the ads won’t say it either. Name the segment, then build the campaign around it.

When is competitor bidding a distraction?

Competitor bidding is a distraction when it takes budget from category keywords that convert better, when the competitor gets too few searches to test, or when your product is not a real alternative. It also becomes expensive if the competitor responds by bidding on your brand, which raises what you pay for your own name.

Stop or pause the test if, after a full sales cycle, the competitor campaign has produced no sales-qualified leads, or if sales cannot win the switching conversation. Put the budget back into the terms that already work, then check again when your product or pricing changes. The Quality Score guide explains why these keywords often score low and why that matters less here.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to bid on competitor names in Google Ads?

Google’s ads policy does not restrict competitor trademarks as keywords. Trademark and advertising law differs by country, so check with a lawyer if your comparison makes strong claims. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I put a competitor’s name in my ad headline?

Usually not safely. Google can restrict a direct competitor’s trademark in ad text when the owner complains, so describe the difference without naming them.

Why is my Quality Score low on competitor keywords?

Google expects fewer clicks on your ad when people searched for another brand, so expected CTR and ad relevance score low. Judge these keywords on customers, not Quality Score.

Will competitors bid on my brand if I bid on theirs?

They may, which can raise your branded click costs. Run your own brand campaign so you keep the top position, and weigh that cost when you judge the test.

How much budget should go to competitor keywords?

Only what is left after your category keywords are fully funded, and enough to reach a result within one sales cycle. For most early accounts that is a small share.

Do competitor-keyword leads close at a lower rate?

Not always. They convert to leads at a lower rate, but the leads that arrive may already know what they want. Compare SQL rate and win rate before deciding.
