Google Ads Quality Score Explained for SaaS
Quality Score is a diagnostic, not a KPI. Here's how to read it and which fixes actually move it.
What is Quality Score?
Quality Score is a 1 to 10 rating Google gives each keyword, based on how your ad and landing page compare with other advertisers for the same searches. It is a diagnostic, not an auction input: Google uses real-time quality signals in the auction, and Quality Score summarizes them so you can see where to improve.
Google states this directly in its Quality Score documentation. What decides your position and price is Ad Rank, which combines your bid, the quality of your ad and other factors at the moment of each search.
What are the three components?
Quality Score has three components, each rated above average, average or below average: expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. The ratings tell you which part to fix. A score of 4 with below-average landing page experience needs a different fix from a 4 with below-average CTR.
How likely your ad is to be clicked compared with other ads for that keyword. Fix with clearer headlines and a specific offer.
How closely the ad matches the intent of the search. Fix with tighter ad groups and headlines that repeat the theme.
How relevant and useful the page is after the click. Fix with message match, speed and an easy form.
Add the Quality Score columns to the keywords report, including the three component ratings.
How do you improve Quality Score?
Improve Quality Score by fixing the component rated below average: tighten ad groups so each ad answers one theme, put the keyword’s idea in the headline, and send clicks to a page that repeats the promise and loads fast. Start with the keywords that spend the most.

When should you ignore Quality Score?
Ignore Quality Score on keywords that convert well at an acceptable cost, and on competitor keywords, where low scores are normal because your ad is not what the searcher named. A keyword with a score of 4 that produces sales-qualified leads cheaply is a good keyword.
Quality Score is a way to find problems, not a goal. Judge keywords on cost per SQL, and use the score to explain why a keyword costs more than it should. The competitor keywords page explains how to judge those terms instead.
Optimise for pipeline and Quality Score will follow.
Chasing a 10/10 on a keyword that never converts is wasted effort. Fix relevance where the money is.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Quality Score?
7 or above is healthy for category keywords. Lower scores are normal on competitor keywords and are fine if the keyword converts at an acceptable cost.
Does Quality Score affect cost per click?
Indirectly. Quality Score itself is not used in the auction, but the quality signals behind it feed Ad Rank, which affects your position and price.
Why is my competitor keyword Quality Score low?
Searchers asked for another brand, so Google expects fewer clicks on your ad and rates relevance lower. Judge these keywords on customers instead.
How long does it take for Quality Score to update?
It updates as new impressions and clicks come in, so low-volume keywords change slowly. Give changes a few weeks.
Does landing page speed affect Quality Score?
Yes, through landing page experience, which considers how useful and easy to use the page is, including on mobile.
Is Quality Score the same as Ad Rank?
No. Ad Rank is calculated in each auction and decides position. Quality Score is a keyword-level diagnostic that summarizes quality signals.
