What is Bing Places, and does it matter for local SEO?

What is Bing Places, and does it matter for local SEO?

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free tool for managing how your business appears in Bing search and Bing Maps. It matters less than Google for most local businesses, but it is the listing people see when they search on Bing, and it takes little effort to claim.

In October 2025 Microsoft announced a rebuilt Bing Places. According to the Bing blog, it moved to bing.com/forbusiness (bingplaces.com redirects there), added a faster import from Google Business Profile, bulk editing tools and a Recommendation Tool, and shows listings in Bing search and Bing Maps. The same post described Copilot integration as planned rather than live at the time, so do not assume it is available.

Which businesses should claim Bing Places?

Every business with a Google Business Profile should claim its Bing listing too, because the import makes it a short job. It matters a little more for businesses whose customers use Windows computers at work: an office supplier, a B2B service firm, an IT support company or a commercial cleaner may find more of its buyers searching on Bing than a café would.

Multi-location businesses get the most from the bulk editing tools, since updating holiday hours across twenty locations one at a time is where listings usually go stale. If you manage many locations, read multi-location SEO first.

Bing also matters for consistency, even when it sends few visitors. Listings on one platform get copied, compared and summarized elsewhere, so a wrong Bing address can surface in places you never see. Claiming it removes one more source of conflicting details.

How do you set up Bing Places?

  1. Fix Google first. Make sure your Google Business Profile matches your master record: name, address, phone, hours, category, website.
  2. Go to bing.com/forbusiness and sign in with an account the business controls, not a personal one that leaves with an employee.
  3. Search for your business. If a listing already exists, claim it rather than creating a new one, to avoid duplicate listings.
  4. Import from Google or enter details manually. See the comparison below.
  5. Complete verification using the method Bing Places offers you.
  6. Check every field after import: name, address, pin, phone, hours, categories, website link, photos.
  7. Look at the Recommendation Tool for suggested improvements, and decide which apply to you.
  8. Add Bing to your quarterly check. Changes on Google do not always flow through.

Should you import from Google or set up Bing manually?

For several locations, the bulk editing tools in the relaunched Bing Places are the main reason to keep Bing current rather than letting it drift. Change holiday hours, phone numbers or a new website structure for every location in one pass, on the same day as Google.

ShoutEx view: import when Google is clean, which it should be after a local SEO audit. Set up manually when Google has a problem you have not fixed yet, such as a suspension or a wrong address, so Bing starts clean.

ShoutEx rule

Small audience, small job, do it anyway.

Bing is a smaller source of local customers than Google for most businesses, but claiming and checking it takes little time and stops wrong details from spreading.

What does a checked Bing listing look like?

Birchwood Hardware, a fictional Winnipeg hardware store, imported its Google profile into Bing. The check found two problems: the import brought over last winter's holiday hours, and the website link pointed to an old promotions page.

The store now changes holiday hours in Google and Bing on the same day, using the same note in its citation log.

What Bing Places mistakes should you avoid?

  • Importing a broken Google profile. The mistake moves to Bing.
  • Creating a new listing when one already exists. Claim it.
  • Using a personal Microsoft account that leaves with an employee or contractor.
  • Ignoring categories after import. Check they describe what the business is.
  • Assuming new features are live. Microsoft described Copilot integration as planned in October 2025. Check what is actually available before you plan around it.
