How does local search work?

How does local search work?

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a short list of businesses on a map, the local pack, above or beside the ordinary web results. Which businesses appear depends mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Local SEO is the work of making your business an accurate, complete and well-known match for the searches you care about.

Google's own guidance on local ranking defines the three in plain terms. Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone searched for. Distance is how far each business is from the person searching. Prominence is how well-known the business is. The same page says complete information, verification, accurate hours and more positive reviews can help, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

One search, two kinds of result: the local pack draws on Business Profiles, the blue link underneath is an ordinary web page. A business can win one and miss the other, which is why the local pack and organic results need separate attention. Fictional businesses.

Where should I start with local SEO?

Start from the problem you can see, not from a list of tactics. Each card opens the page that answers that problem first.

A man pointing at a map on an office board while a colleague takes notes

If you are unsure which problem you have, run the scored local SEO audit first. It ranks the gaps by likely cost.

A rough order that suits most businesses: get the profile verified and accurate, fix categories and hours, start asking every customer for a review, build one strong page per core service, then work on citations, local links and measurement.

What are the foundations of local SEO?

The foundations decide what you are competing for and how you will be judged: which searches show a map, which words people use, whether you show an address, and how many locations you can honestly claim. Get these wrong and the rest of the work points at the wrong target.

Verification can take days and earning prominence usually takes months; see how long local SEO takes.

What does a strong Google Business Profile look like?

A strong profile is verified, uses the business's real name, has the narrowest category that describes it, shows accurate hours, and gives a searcher enough photos, services and reviews to choose without leaving the map. A weak one tries to rank with keywords in the name and leaves the useful fields empty.

Weak profile: the name breaks Google's naming rules and invites a suspension or a competitor's edit, and the empty fields give a searcher no reason to call. Fictional business.

ShoutEx rule

Fix the listing before you chase the ranking.

Most local businesses we review lose more customers to a wrong category, missing hours or an unanswered phone than to any ranking factor. Get the profile accurate, verified and complete, then work on reviews, pages and links.

How do reviews affect local search?

Reviews feed prominence, and they decide whether a searcher who sees you actually calls. A recent, detailed review answers the question a stranger cannot ask you.

  • Ask every customer the same way, at the same moment, with a direct link or QR code.
  • Never offer a discount, gift or entry into a draw for a review, and never filter out unhappy customers before asking.
  • Reply to reviews within a few days, briefly and specifically, including the critical ones.
  • Report reviews that break Google's policies, not reviews you simply disagree with.

How should a local business website support local SEO?

The website supports relevance and confirms the details on the profile. Searchers who tap through want the service, the area and a way to call or book.

Example · educational mock-up, fictional website
/Who you are, what you do, where you serve
/drain-cleaning/One page per core service, with real detail
/water-heaters/Each service answers cost, process and timing
/service-areas/Lists the areas you genuinely cover
/service-areas/cambridge/Only if you have something specific to say about it
/contact/Name, address or area, phone and hours that match the profile
A simple structure for a service-area business: services first, area pages only where there is local substance. Multi-location brands add a page per real location. See service and location architecture for when each pattern fits. Fictional site.

The common mistake is a copied page for every nearby town with the name swapped, which Google can treat as doorway abuse. Location pages shows how to write pages that earn their place.

How do citations, local links and other platforms help?

Citations, memberships, sponsorships and local press coverage are how the wider web confirms that your business exists, where it is and that people know it. Consistency matters more than volume: one wrong phone number copied across ten directories does real harm.

Google is not the only map. iPhone users often search in Apple Maps, Bing feeds its own results and some assistants, and AI tools now answer local questions directly. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and no special AI files or markup are needed. The same accurate, consistent business information wins in all of these places.

How do you measure local SEO, and what is a better position worth?

Measure local SEO by the actions people take, calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings, and follow them to enquiries and customers. Rankings are a diagnostic, not the goal.

The calculator below turns a better position into money using your own numbers: monthly searches, the share of searchers who act on your listing now and with a better position, how many actions become enquiries, and how many enquiries become customers.

Who is this local SEO guide for?

This guide is for businesses whose customers come from a local area: shops and restaurants, clinics and professional firms, trades and home services that travel to customers, and brands with several locations. That covers most Canadian companies. According to ISED's Key Small Business Statistics 2025, Canada had 1.10 million employer businesses in December 2024, and 1.08 million of them (98.2%) were small businesses with 1 to 99 employees, employing 46.6% of private-sector workers.

Every example uses fictional Canadian businesses on .example domains. ShoutEx plans to add city playbooks later, but only for cities where there is genuinely city-specific material to cover, such as how local business improvement areas work or how service areas behave across a large region.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of making a business appear in local search results, mainly the Google Maps listings and the local pack, and in web results for searches with local intent. It covers the Business Profile, reviews, website pages, citations and measurement.

How is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Regular SEO is about web pages ranking for searches anywhere. Local SEO adds the Business Profile, distance from the searcher, reviews and consistent business details, and it competes for the map as well as the web results.

What are the main local ranking factors?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Complete and accurate information, verification, accurate hours and reviews all contribute.

Can I pay Google for a better map ranking?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear in or near local results, but they are labelled as sponsored and are a separate product.

Why is my business not showing in Google Maps?

The usual causes are an unverified profile, a category that does not match the search, distance from the searcher, a duplicate listing or a suspension. A local SEO audit checks each one in order.

Do I need a physical address to appear in Google Maps?

No. Service-area businesses that visit customers can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead. You still need a real business location that meets Google's guidelines.

Should I put keywords or the city in my business name?

No. Google's guidelines require the real-world name you use on signs and stationery. Adding service or location words can lead to a suspension and gives competitors grounds to report you.

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number. Compare yourself with the businesses that appear for your main searches and aim for a steady flow of recent reviews rather than a one-off push.

Can I give customers a discount for leaving a review?

No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews, including discounts and free goods, and it prohibits asking only happy customers. Ask everyone the same way.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Fixing profile errors can show results within weeks once changes are approved. Building reviews and authority against strong competitors usually takes several months.

Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?

Only where you have something genuinely useful and specific to say about that place. Near-identical pages with the city name swapped can be treated as doorway pages.

Do citations and directory listings still matter?

Yes, mainly for accuracy and trust. Consistent details on major maps platforms, industry bodies and local organizations confirm your business information. Volume alone does little.

Does Apple Maps or Bing matter for a Canadian business?

Yes. Many iPhone users search in Apple Maps, and Bing powers its own search and maps results. Both are free to claim and take little time to keep accurate.

How do I appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews for local searches?

There is no separate trick. Google says AI features have no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Accurate, consistent business information, reviews and clear service pages help across all of them.

What should I track each month?

Position across your area for main searches, profile views, calls, direction requests, website clicks, enquiries and new customers, plus review count and recency.

What is a local rank grid?

A map of your position for one search, checked from many points around your business. It shows where you appear and where you drop away, which a single ranking check cannot.

What happens if my Business Profile is suspended?

Find the reason, fix the cause and appeal through Google's appeals tool with evidence. Do not create a new profile while an appeal is under review.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes, most of the foundations are within reach of an owner: verification, categories, hours, photos, review requests and basic service pages. Competitive markets and multi-location brands usually benefit from specialist help.
