Meta Ads Targeting: Audiences That Still Work
Meta targeting has moved from picking interests to feeding signals. Detailed interests still exist, but broad audiences with good conversion data usually do as well or better. Your own data, customer lists, site visitors and engagers, is where you still have an edge.
How should you target Meta Ads in 2026?
Start broad, with location and age set, and let Advantage+ audience find buyers from your conversion data. Add custom audiences and lookalikes from your own lists. Use detailed interests as a suggestion, not a fence. Then exclude people you don’t want to pay for, such as customers.
| Audience | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Broad / Advantage+ | Location and age, Meta finds the rest | Most prospecting with good tracking |
| Custom audience | Your customer list, site visitors, video viewers, engagers | Retargeting and exclusions |
| Lookalike | People similar to a source list | Prospecting from your best customers |
| Detailed targeting | Interests and behaviours | Early tests with little data |
Which custom audiences should you build?
- Website visitors in the last 30, 90 and 180 days, from the Pixel.
- Pricing page or demo page visitors who didn’t convert.
- People who watched 50% or more of your videos.
- Instagram and Facebook profile engagers.
- Customer and lead lists uploaded from your CRM, hashed by Meta on upload.
Can you target by job title or company?
Not reliably. Meta removed many detailed options over the years and its job data is self-reported and sparse. For B2B, upload lists of target contacts, build lookalikes from closed-won customers, and use content that only your buyer cares about. That self-selects the audience. For true role targeting, use LinkedIn Ads targeting.
Who should you exclude?
Current customers, recent converters, employees and job seekers who reach you through careers pages. Exclusions stop you paying to reach people who already said yes. For local or language-specific campaigns, such as Quebec, see selling in Quebec and run French creative in its own ad set. Creative that speaks to one buyer also narrows reach naturally; see Meta ad creative.
Target with data, narrow with message.
Let the system go broad and let the ad itself speak to one buyer. The right people will stop scrolling.
How do you set up audiences?
- Install the Pixel and build visitor audiences.
- Upload customer and lead lists from your CRM.
- Build a 1% lookalike from your best customers.
- Run one broad prospecting ad set and one retargeting ad set.
- Add customer exclusions to every prospecting ad set.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best targeting for Facebook ads?
For most advertisers with good tracking, broad or Advantage+ audiences plus custom and lookalike audiences from their own data.
Can I target by job title on Meta?
Only loosely. Job data is self-reported and limited. Use customer lists, lookalikes and specific creative instead.
What is a lookalike audience?
An audience of people similar to a source list, such as your best customers.
What is a custom audience?
An audience built from your data: site visitors, customer lists, app users or people who engaged with your ads.
Should I still use interest targeting?
As a starting suggestion when you have little conversion data. With good data, broad usually matches or beats it.
Who should I exclude from Meta Ads?
Current customers, recent converters, employees and other people you don’t want to pay to reach.
