What screenshots and preview videos should a B2B app use?

Screenshots are the part of a store listing most people actually look at. For a technical or field app they have to prove, in seconds, that the app handles real work: a real drawing, a real work order, a real inspection. This guide covers what each store allows, how to plan the sequence and how to judge a set before you upload it.

What should B2B app screenshots show?

What should screenshots for a work app show?

Show the finished result first: the marked-up drawing, the signed work order, the completed checklist. Then show how quickly it gets done in the field, then what the team or office receives. Each frame needs one short caption in the user's words.

Avoid empty dashboards, login screens and abstract illustrations. A project engineer judges a drawing viewer by whether the sheet looks sharp and whether the markup tools look usable with gloves on, not by a slogan.

How many screenshots and which sizes do the stores accept?

The two stores set different rules, and both change their device lists from time to time, so check the current pages before a design sprint.

For tablet-heavy users, such as engineers reviewing drawings or inspectors on an iPad, the tablet set is not optional in practice. Design it as its own story, since a tablet shows more of the drawing and less need for captions.

How do you plan the screenshot story?

  1. Frame 1, the outcome. The thing the searcher wants, finished. Caption under six words.
  2. Frame 2, the field moment. The app in use where work happens: on site, at the panel, at the line.
  3. Frame 3, the hard part made easy. Offline use, revision compare, photo evidence.
  4. Frame 4, what others receive. The PDF, the update in the office, the client copy.
  5. Frame 5, team and admin. Shared folders, roles, templates. This is where the person who buys for a company starts paying attention.
  6. Frames 6 and on, detail. Integrations, exports, security notes, language support.

The first three matter most because, as the App Store guide explains, they can travel into search results. Frames four and five speak to the buyer behind the user, which supports the move from individual to company.

Weak: slogans, no visible drawing, a sign-in screen. Nothing tells an engineer what the app does. Fictional app and listing, written by ShoutEx as an educational mock-up.

The first screenshot is the ad.

Write its caption as the answer to the search: the task done, in the user's words, with the finished result on screen.

Should a B2B app make a preview video?

Make a video when motion explains something stills cannot: a scan turning into a clean PDF, a route reordering itself, pinch-zoom on a large drawing. Skip it if the video would only repeat the screenshots.

Apple previews run 15 to 30 seconds, with up to three per device size and language. On Google Play you link a YouTube video. Keep the first seconds self-explanatory with the sound off, which is how most people watch on a job site.

ShoutEx view: record the video on a real device with real-looking project data, then trim hard. A shaky but genuine screen recording of a sheet opening in a basement with no signal persuades a site engineer more than a polished animation, because it answers the doubt they actually have: will it work where I work?

What screenshot mistakes cost installs?

  • Tiny interface text. Crop and enlarge the area that matters instead of showing the full screen.
  • Captions that compete with the UI. One line, high contrast, top of the frame.
  • Device frames that waste space. A frame is optional; the content is not.
  • Same set on both stores without a check. Play also shows a feature graphic, so the first screenshot does a different job there.
  • Out-of-date screens after a redesign, which confuse new users at the first step of onboarding.

Trade-off: polished marketing art can look great but read like an ad. For work tools, real-looking screens usually earn more trust than illustration.

Activation keeps you honest: a set that wins installs but brings the wrong users is not a win.

Frequently asked questions

How many screenshots can I upload to the App Store?

Up to 10 per device size. Only the first few show in search, so put the strongest first.

How many screenshots does Google Play allow?

Between 2 and 8 per device type, along with a 512 x 512 icon and a 1024 x 500 feature graphic.

Do I need iPad screenshots?

Yes, if your app runs on iPad, Apple requires the 13-inch iPad set.

How long can an App Store preview video be?

Between 15 and 30 seconds, with up to three previews per device size and language.

How do I add a video to Google Play?

Add a YouTube URL as the preview video in the store listing.

Should screenshots show real data?

Show realistic but fictional data in real interface states. Never show features the app does not have.

Should screenshots differ between the two stores?

Often yes. Play shows a feature graphic and different layouts, so check how the first frames look in each store before reusing one set.
