Should you test your App Store page or build custom product pages?
Apple gives developers three tools to change what a visitor sees without shipping a new app: product page optimization tests the default page, custom product pages give each audience its own page and link, and in-app events add timely reasons to open the app. For a work app that serves several trades or roles, together they are the closest thing the App Store has to landing pages.
Should you run a page test or build custom product pages?
Product page optimization (PPO) runs an A/B test on your default App Store page. Apple's product page optimization page explains you can test up to three treatments against the original for up to 90 days, varying the icon, screenshots and app previews.
Custom product pages are permanent alternative versions of your page. Per Apple's custom product pages documentation you can create up to 70, each with different screenshots, promotional text and previews and a unique URL. You can use them in Apple Ads, assign keywords so a page can appear in organic search, and, from iOS 18, add deep links that open a specific place in the app.
Most work apps need both: a tested default for general search and tailored pages for each trade, role or campaign.
Built for HVAC service: furnace and AC checklists, refrigerant readings and customer sign-off on one work order.
Built for electrical service: panel schedules, circuit photos and permits attached to the job before you leave.
Built for plumbing service: before and after photos, parts used and a signed work order sent to the office.
When does each tool fit a B2B or field app?
| Situation | Best tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One audience, plenty of search traffic | Product page optimization | Improves the page most visitors see |
| Several trades or roles | Custom product pages | Each gets its own screenshots and message |
| Apple Ads ad groups by theme | Custom product pages | Ad group and page can match |
| Partner or association link | Custom product page URL | Members land on a page that names them |
| Seasonal work or a new template | In-app event | Searchable and visible on the product page |
| Very little traffic | Neither yet | Tests need volume; fix the basics first |
ShoutEx view: a field service app sold through supplier partnerships benefits most. When a wholesaler's newsletter links to a page that shows its own trade's work order, the visitor recognizes the job immediately. Build those links into the partner plan described in communities and partners.
How do you plan custom product pages by trade or role?
- Pick the split. Trade (HVAC, electrical, plumbing), role (technician, dispatcher, owner) or source (Apple Ads theme, partner, email).
- Write one promise per page. The promotional text names the audience and the result.
- Change the first three screenshots. Same features, different job on screen.
- Assign keywords where it fits. A page for electricians can carry terms like panel schedule so it can appear for those searches.
- Add a deep link so a tap from an electrician's page opens the electrical template, where supported.
- Use the URL in ads, partner emails and your website's trade pages, then compare conversion by page.
How do you run a product page optimization test?
Start with one hypothesis and change one kind of asset. If you change the icon and the screenshots at once, a win tells you little about what to do next.
| Item | Example plan for FixRoute |
|---|---|
| Hypothesis | Showing a signed work order first beats showing the schedule first |
| Original | Frame 1: the day's job list |
| Treatment A | Frame 1: signed work order with photos |
| Treatment B | Frame 1: customer signing on the phone |
| Traffic split | Even split across original and treatments |
| Length | Until Apple reports a result, within the 90-day limit |
| Decision | Apply the winner; check activation of the new installs |
Tests need traffic. If the page gets only a handful of visits a day, the test may run for weeks without a clear answer. In that case put effort into search terms and screenshot quality first.
Test the default, tailor the traffic you send.
Use product page optimization to improve the page that search visitors see, and custom product pages for every campaign, partner or audience you can send to a specific link.
Where do in-app events fit for a work app?
In-app events are timely things happening inside your app: a new template pack, a training challenge, a seasonal checklist. Apple's in-app events guidance says events are searchable and appear on the product page; you can have up to 10 live at once and up to 15 approved.
New for spring: an AC start-up checklist with fields for pressures, temperatures and photos.
Good events for B2B apps tie to the work calendar: start of construction season, annual inspection deadlines, a new code edition. Avoid events that are simply marketing announcements; they rarely earn taps.
What mistakes do teams make with page tests and custom pages?
- Testing tiny differences such as a colour change, then waiting months for a result.
- Creating custom pages nobody links to. A page without traffic from ads, partners or keywords does nothing.
- Promising a trade-specific app when the app itself has no trade templates. The first screen after install must match the page.
- Forgetting localization. A Quebec partner link should land on a French page.
- Ending a test on download count alone without checking whether the new users activated.
Trade-off: every custom page is something to maintain after each redesign. Start with the three to five audiences that bring most revenue.
What should you measure for page tests and custom pages?
| Metric | Question it answers | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion rate by treatment | Which page version wins? | App Store Connect, product page optimization |
| Conversion rate by custom page | Does each audience page persuade? | App Store Connect, by page |
| Apple Ads installs by ad group | Does the matched page improve paid results? | Apple Ads reporting |
| Event impressions and opens | Did the event earn attention? | App Store Connect, in-app events |
| Activation by page | Did each audience reach a first work order? | Your product analytics with the deep link |

How many treatments can a product page optimization test have?
