How much does Google Ads cost for a dental clinic?

Google Ads costs a dental clinic whatever budget it sets, but the price of each click depends on the city, the service and how many clinics bid on the same searches. Google publishes no average cost per click for dentists, so the reliable method is to check your own keywords in Keyword Planner and plan backwards from what a new patient is worth.

Search campaigns charge when someone clicks the ad, and calls from a call asset are charged like clicks. You choose an average daily budget and Google spends around it. The table below shows how the arithmetic works at different budgets. It is a model, not a forecast.

How budget, cost per click and enquiry rate interactAssumed numbers to show the arithmetic

$8,000$1172710%73$110

The point of the table is scale. If your clicks cost more than the assumed figure and only one click in fifteen becomes a call or form, a small budget produces too few enquiries to judge the channel within a month or two.

What drives the cost per click for dentists?

Five things drive what a dental clinic pays per click: competition for the keyword, the location, the service, the quality of the ad and landing page, and the bid strategy. Google's Ad Rank documentation explains that ad quality and landing page experience affect position, not only the bid.

DriverWhat raises costWhat you can do
CompetitionMany clinics bidding on "dentist near me" downtownAdd service and neighbourhood keywords with fewer bidders
LocationDense areas with many clinicsTarget the area your patients actually travel from
ServiceHigh-value treatments such as implants attract more biddersBid on the consultation, and judge it on consult bookings
QualityGeneric ads and homepagesMatch each ad and page to the search
BiddingUncapped automated bidding with little conversion dataCap bids early; move to targets once bookings are tracked

Quality is the driver clinics control most. A clinic whose ad and page both say "emergency dentist in Hamilton" often pays less per booked visit than one sending the same search to a homepage. See landing pages for dental ads.

How much can a dental clinic afford to pay per click?

A dental clinic can afford to pay up to the value of a new patient multiplied by three rates: the share of clicks that call or enquire, the share of enquiries that book, and the share of bookings that attend. Then apply a ceiling well below break-even, because fees are not profit.

Worked example: what one click is worthOne clinic's assumptions, before costs of providing care
StepValueRunning result
First-year fees from a new patient$900$900 per attended patient
Show rate (booked to attended)85%$765 per booking
Booking rate (enquiry to booking)60%$459 per enquiry
Click-to-enquiry rate9%$41 per click
Target: spend no more than 25% of first-year fees25%$10.33 maximum average cost per click

The last row is a business decision, not a rule. Patients who stay for years and bring their families justify a higher ceiling, which is why the dental marketing budget guide includes a calculator with retention. Emergency patients may be worth less in the first year if they do not return for hygiene, so judge that campaign separately.

How should a dental clinic split its Google Ads budget?

Split the budget by campaign according to patient value and proven results. Give most of it to the campaign that brings attended new patients at an acceptable cost, keep a share for one test at a time, and keep brand spend small. Review the split monthly, once you have enough bookings to compare.

Example monthly split for a $4,000 dental accountIllustrative only
Starting split
New patients$1,800Steady demand, long-term value
Emergency$1,200Open hours only
Implants consults$700Test, lower volume
Brand$300Protects your name
After three months of data
New patients$2,000Lowest cost per attended patient
Emergency$1,000Trimmed to peak hours
Implants consults$800Kept; consults convert well
Brand$200Lower need

The second row is what a typical rebalance looks like after real data, not what yours will show. If emergency patients become regular patients at your clinic, the emergency share may grow instead. Our emergency campaign guide explains how to measure that.

ShoutEx rule

Set the budget from the patient, then check the clicks.

Work out what a new patient is worth to the clinic and how many you can see. Then check whether your market can deliver enough clicks at a price that leaves a margin.

What is a sensible first Google Ads budget for a dental clinic?

A sensible first budget is one that can produce roughly 30 to 50 enquiries over two to three months at your expected cost per enquiry. Fewer than that and you cannot tell a weak channel from a slow month. Your own Keyword Planner prices, not a national figure, decide the dollar amount.

  1. Pick one or two campaigns and one area. A focused test learns faster.
  2. Estimate cost per enquiry from Keyword Planner ranges and a cautious enquiry rate.
  3. Multiply by the 30 to 50 enquiries you need to judge the test.
  4. Spread it over 8 to 12 weeks. Google can spend up to twice the average daily budget on one day, but not more than the daily average times 30.4 in a month.
  5. Check your chair capacity. There is no point buying more enquiries than the schedule can absorb.
  6. Decide in advance what result means scale, adjust or stop.

When the test ends, compare the cost per attended new patient with first-year fees. The general method is in our Google Ads cost guide.

How does a dental clinic stop paying for the wrong clicks?

Most wasted dental spend comes from searches that were never patients: job seekers, students, product buyers and people outside your area. The search terms report shows the actual searches behind your clicks, and reading it weekly is the cheapest way to lower cost per patient.

  • Add negatives weekly from the report. Start from the starter list in Google Ads keywords for dentists.
  • Pause outside answering hours for call-led campaigns, unless an after-hours path is in place.
  • Tighten location to people in or regularly in your area.
  • Track bookings, not just clicks. Without booking data, automated bidding optimizes for the wrong thing; see call and booking tracking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a click cost for dentists on Google Ads?

It depends on the city, keyword and month. Google publishes no dental average, so check the top-of-page bid ranges in Keyword Planner for your own keywords and area.

What is a good monthly Google Ads budget for a dental clinic?

Enough to produce 30 to 50 enquiries over two to three months at your expected cost per enquiry, and no more than your chairs can handle.

Why are emergency dentist clicks expensive?

The intent is urgent and many clinics bid on the same searches. Limiting the campaign to answering hours and a tight area usually lowers cost per visit.

Can a dental clinic run Google Ads on $500 a month?

Yes, but expect few clicks in most cities. Use it for one tightly targeted campaign, such as one service in one neighbourhood, and judge it over several months.

Does Google charge for calls from ads?

Calls from call assets are charged like a click on the ad. Track them as conversions so you can see which calls became bookings.

Does a better landing page lower my cost?

It can. Google's auction uses expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, so a well-matched page can improve position or price.

How do I know if my dental ads cost too much?

Compare the cost per attended new patient with first-year fees. If it takes a large share of those fees, fix targeting and the landing page before raising the budget.

Should implants get a bigger budget than cleanings?

Not automatically. Implant consults are worth more but convert more slowly. Set each ceiling from that service's value and booking rate.
