Marketing for Law Firms in Calgary
Calgary added people both in and around Greater Downtown and in new communities on its outer edges. That splits the legal market in two: households buying homes and writing first wills, and companies needing contracts and leases near the core. Alberta's guidance shapes the words you can use for both.
How is Calgary's legal market changing?
It is growing at both ends. The City of Calgary's census data shows 1,306,780 residents in 2021, up 5.5% from 2016, with the fastest growth in and near Greater Downtown and in new communities on the city's edges.
The median age is 38, about 14% of residents (177,405) are 65 or older, and about 19% speak a non-official language most often at home, led by Punjabi, Tagalog, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu.
Which practice areas fit Calgary's growth?
ShoutEx view, inferred from where people are moving rather than from demand data. New edge communities such as Seton, Mahogany, Cornerstone and Livingston bring purchase closings, first wills and guardianship questions, and some separations. The core brings incorporations, commercial leases and employment contracts.
| Area | Matters to plan for | Message that fits |
|---|---|---|
| South-east edge (Seton, Mahogany) | Purchases, wills for new parents | Evening and weekend signing appointments |
| North-east edge (Cornerstone, Saddle Ridge) | Purchases, family sponsorship, wills | Punjabi or Tagalog spoken, if true |
| Beltline and East Village | Condo purchases, leases, small companies | Walkable office, fixed-fee scope where you offer it |
| Established south-west | Estates, powers of attorney, downsizing sales | Home or hospital visits, if you offer them |
Practice-area playbooks are in real estate law marketing and wills and estates marketing.
What does the Law Society of Alberta expect from firm advertising?
Alberta's guidance on ethical and effective advertising starts where other provinces start: marketing must be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable. It is unusually direct about wording, so it works as a checklist.
| Topic | What the guidance says | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Titles | Lawyers may not advertise as specialists or experts | Delete "specialize" and "expertise" from bios and ads |
| Superiority | No "leading", "top" or "best" | Describe services, years and languages instead |
| Testimonials | None with emotional appeals | Remove dramatic client quotes |
| Reviews and ratings | Manipulated ratings or fake reviews mislead | Ask every client the same way; never write reviews |
| Awards and rankings | Genuine service honours fine; paid rankings a problem | Drop badges you paid to receive |
| Fees | Say whether other amounts are billed | Add disbursements and GST lines to fee pages |
| Vulnerable people | Do not take advantage of them | No ads timed to a crisis |
What should a Calgary law firm ad look like?
Lead with the community and the matter, call the team lawyers, and describe the service or the fee scope rather than the firm's standing.
Top-rated closings. Our experts handle it all. Call today.
- "Leading" and "top-rated" claim superiority Alberta's guidance warns against
- "Expertise" and "experts" are words lawyers may not use for themselves there
- "Handle it all" is vague about scope and fees
Home purchase closings. Fixed fee shown online; disbursements and GST billed extra.
- Names the community searched
- States the fee scope and what is extra
- No ranking, no promise
Landing pages for these ads are covered in law firm ad landing pages.
Describe experience; never rank it.
"Has acted on residential purchases since 2012" can be checked. "Calgary's leading real estate lawyer" cannot. Write the first kind of sentence everywhere.
How should a Calgary firm use referral and matching services?
Carefully, because Alberta makes lawyers responsible for how a referral or matching service describes them, and says those services must not rank or rate lawyers. A platform that calls you a "top 3 Calgary lawyer" puts the problem on your desk.
- Read your listing on each platform as a client would see it.
- Ask the platform to remove rankings, star ratings it controls, and any "expert" label.
- If it will not, leave the platform.
- Keep a dated screenshot of each listing for your file.
More on directories and paid lists is in legal directories for law firms.
What should a Calgary firm do in its first 90 days?
Clean up the wording first, then pick one edge community and one downtown matter to test.
| Weeks | Focus | Actions | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Wording sweep | Remove expert, specialize, leading and top from site, profiles, bios and directories | Pages and listings cleaned |
| 4–7 | Community launch | Search ads and a profile post for one edge community; evening signing slots on the booking page | Closings booked from that area |
| 8–13 | Core matter | A fixed-scope incorporation or lease page with fees and extras; LinkedIn articles by the lawyer | Consultations per matter type |
Frequently asked questions
Can an Alberta lawyer say they specialize in family law?
The Law Society of Alberta's guidance says lawyers may not advertise as specialists or experts, so avoid "specialize" and "expertise".
Can a Calgary firm show a paid ranking badge?
Rankings must come from a legitimate evaluation. A badge bought for a fee is a problem under Alberta's guidance.
Are client testimonials allowed in Alberta?
Not ones with emotional appeals. Many firms skip them and use clear service descriptions instead.
Who is responsible for how a matching service describes a lawyer?
The lawyer. The guidance also says those services must not rank or rate lawyers.
What must a Calgary fee ad say?
Whether other amounts, such as disbursements and GST, are billed on top of the advertised fee.
Which Calgary areas suit real estate and wills marketing?
New edge communities with many first-time buyers and young families, in our view. Test one community at a time.
Is this page ethics advice?
No. It is a marketing summary. Check the Law Society of Alberta's guidance and Code.
