A Practical Guide to Marketing a Law Firm
Practical ways for Canadian law firms to get more of the matters they want through search, maps, directories, ads, websites and faster intake, written for managing partners and firm administrators and kept inside law society marketing rules.
How can a law firm get more clients?
A law firm gets more clients by being easy to find, easy to check and easy to reach: a complete Google Business Profile for the firm and its lawyers, honest reviews, search ads for the matters it wants, clear practice-area pages, and intake that answers calls and forms quickly and books consultations.
The right mix depends on the matter. Someone just charged with an offence calls within the hour. A separating parent compares a few firms over several days. A founder asks an accountant for a name. Each needs a different channel and message, and every message must fit your law society's marketing rules. This guide does not cover personal injury marketing.
| If you want more… | Lean on | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Enquiries that turn into retainers | Faster answering, conflict checks, booking | Intake and speed to lead |
| Family law clients | Search ads, practice pages, careful wording | Family law |
| Urgent criminal matters | Call ads, after-hours answering | Criminal defence |
| Immigration files | Language pages, authorized-representative clarity | Immigration law |
| Residential closings | Price pages that follow fee rules, search ads | Real estate law |
| Wills and estates | Profile, postcards, plain planning pages | Wills and estates |
| Employment matters | Separate employee and employer pages | Employment law |
| Business clients | LinkedIn, referral partners, fixed-scope pages | Business and corporate law |
Each channel below has its own page, Google Ads has six more, and twelve cities in five provinces have local strategies. If you read one page next, read intake and speed to lead, because most firms lose more clients after the enquiry than before it.
Which marketing channels work for law firms?
The channels that work best catch people already looking for a lawyer: Google Business Profile and Maps, search ads, practice-area SEO, reviews and legal directories. LinkedIn and direct mail reach people before they search, and AI assistants are a growing first stop. The website and intake turn all of them into consultations.

Estimate what your marketing budget could generate in enquiries, consultations, retained clients and fees.
Illustrative estimate only. Actual results depend on your practice areas, market, competition, intake speed and matter value. No outcome is guaranteed. The presets are editable examples, not industry benchmarks. Start from your own numbers where you have them. Repeat-matter multiplier in this example: 2x.
At these assumptions, $5,000 a month could bring about 8.2 retained clients and $40,909 in first-year fees. Want help turning this budget into retained matters? ShoutEx can help you plan and run the acquisition strategy.

A firm whose phones go to voicemail at lunch does not need more ads. Fix answering and conflict checks first, then buy traffic for the practice areas with the most capacity and value.
What do compliant law firm Google Ads look like?
Compliant law firm ads say the team are lawyers, repeat the searcher's words, and give a practical reason to call, such as the area served, languages or how fees work. They leave out rankings, expert or specialist titles, predicted results and emotional pressure.

Read the guideWhat marketing rules apply to lawyers in Canada?
Each provincial law society sets its own rules, but most build on the Federation's Model Code. The Canadian Bar Association's advertising toolkit quotes its rule 4.2-1: marketing must be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable; must not be misleading, confusing or deceptive; and must be in the best interests of the public and consistent with a high standard of professionalism. The commentary flags testimonials with emotional appeals, suggestions of superiority and unjustified expectations.
| Province | Law society | Rule that most changes the marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Law Society of Ontario | Identify as a lawyer in all marketing; no second-opinion marketing; all-inclusive residential real estate prices; specialist only if certified |
| British Columbia | Law Society of BC | No unjustified expectations; no specialist label unless authorized; discourage others from using it |
| Alberta | Law Society of Alberta | No specialist or expert claims, no "leading" or "top"; responsible for how referral services describe you |
| Nova Scotia | Nova Scotia Barristers' Society | Bans specialist, expert and synonyms; past results need a disclaimer |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | Law Society of NL | Read sections 4.2 and 4.3 of the NL Code; we do not summarize them |
The full comparison, a pre-publish checklist and compliant and non-compliant examples are on law firm marketing rules by province. For local detail, read the Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax and St. John's pages. None of this is legal or ethics advice.
How should marketing differ by practice area?
Marketing should differ by practice area because each kind of client decides on a different clock. A person who has just been arrested calls within the hour, a separating parent compares firms over days or weeks, and a business owner may take weeks and ask an adviser first.

Match the channel and the message to that clock, and keep claims modest. The table is a starting point; the cards lead to a full page for each practice area. Personal injury is not covered in this guide.
| Practice area | How fast they decide | What they compare | Channels that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Criminal defence | Minutes to hours | Who answers now, court location | Call ads, Maps, after-hours answering |
| Family law | Days to weeks | Approach, fees, who will handle the file | Practice pages, search ads, reviews |
| Immigration | Days to weeks | Authorization, languages, process | Language pages, search ads, directories |
| Real estate | Days | All-in price, signing times | Price pages, search ads, realtor referrals |
| Wills and estates | Weeks | Clarity, cost, home visits | Profile, postcards, planning pages |
| Employment | Days | Employee or employer side, fees | Separate pages, search ads |
| Business law | Weeks | Fit, scope, referral source | LinkedIn, accountants, fixed-scope pages |

Plan from capacity and the matters you want, set the budget from fees per retained matter and cost per retained client, and measure every channel by consultations booked and matters opened rather than clicks. Know the size of the field too: the Federation of Law Societies' 2025 statistics report counts 117,467 active or practising members across Canada, a figure that includes Quebec notaries, with 46,654 in Ontario alone.
- Price campaigns from matter value with Google Ads cost for law firms.
- Track calls, forms and retained matters by source with call and intake tracking, without sending confidential details to ad platforms.
- Answer web forms and missed calls within the hour during business hours, and run conflict checks before the consultation.
- Check whether Local Services Ads are open to your practice area and city before budgeting for them.
Can law firms get clients from ChatGPT and AI search?
Some people now ask AI assistants what to do about a legal problem or which firm to call, then look up the firms mentioned. No one can promise a mention, but firms with clear, accurate practice-area and lawyer pages are easier for these systems to find and describe.
Google's guidance on AI features and your website says no special markup is needed: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and the usual SEO practices apply. That means specific practice-area pages, lawyer bios with their real call years and languages, accurate office details and a site crawlers can read. The full approach is in AI search for law firms.
Law Firm Marketing by City
Local markets differ. Toronto rewards niche and neighbourhood focus among many competitors, Ottawa rewards French-language service, Brampton rewards multilingual intake, and outside Ontario a different law society's rules change what an ad may say. Each city page has its own client groups, neighbourhoods, sample ads and a first 90 days plan.

Local strategyFrequently asked questions
What is the most effective marketing for a law firm?
Usually a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, search ads for the matters you want, clear practice-area pages and fast intake. The mix depends on your practice areas and capacity.
Do Google Ads work for law firms?
Yes, for many practice areas, because people search when a legal problem arrives. Results depend on keywords, ad wording, landing pages, call handling and tracking.
How much should a law firm spend on marketing?
Enough to fill the consultation time you have with the matters you want, at a cost per retained client your fees support. Start from capacity and matter value rather than a fixed percentage.
Can lawyers call themselves experts or specialists in Canada?
Generally no, unless a law society has certified or authorized it. Alberta and Nova Scotia name "expert" and "expertise" too, so leave those words out.
Can a law firm use client testimonials?
The rules we read flag testimonials with emotional appeals, and some provinces add further limits. Many firms use plain service descriptions instead. Check your law society.
Can a law firm advertise past results?
In Ontario and Nova Scotia, amounts recovered or past successes need a statement that past results do not predict future ones. Describing the process is usually safer.
Can a law firm display "best lawyer" awards?
Only genuine awards from a real evaluation. Rankings bought for a fee, or superlatives such as "best" and "#1", can breach the rules.
Do ads have to say the firm's people are lawyers?
In Ontario, marketing must identify that the person is licensed as a lawyer. Saying "lawyers" in every ad is a safe habit everywhere.
Can a law firm ask clients for Google reviews?
Yes, if you ask every client the same way, offer nothing in return and do not screen out unhappy clients. Never confirm a client relationship in a reply.
Is SEO worth it for law firms?
Yes for most firms, because people search by matter and location all year. Expect months before results and run paid search alongside it.
Are legal directories worth paying for?
Some are, especially where clients check licensing. Avoid paid rankings and any listing that adds titles you are not allowed to use.
Should a law firm offer free consultations?
It depends on the practice area and how many enquiries you can screen. Whatever you offer, describe it accurately and run a conflict check first.
How fast should a law firm respond to web enquiries?
Within the hour during business hours where you can. Speed matters most for urgent matters such as criminal charges.
Can law firms get clients from ChatGPT?
Some clients ask AI assistants for help. No one can guarantee a mention, but clear practice-area and lawyer pages improve the odds.
Does direct mail work for law firms?
It can for planning matters such as wills and estates or business law. Never mail people because they are in distress, such as after an arrest or a separation.
Does this guide cover personal injury marketing?
No. Personal injury is outside the scope of this guide.
Is this guide legal or ethics advice?
No. It is marketing guidance with fictional examples written to strict rules. Check your own law society before publishing.
