Immigration Law Marketing: Trust Before Everything
Immigration clients make big decisions about their lives, often in a second language and sometimes from another country. They have also heard about scams. Immigration marketing that wins is clear about who the firm is, what it is allowed to do and what it costs.
Who searches for an immigration lawyer?
People sponsoring a spouse or family member, international students and workers planning permanent residence, people whose application was refused, and employers hiring from abroad. Many search from outside Canada, and many search in languages other than English or French.
Each group has a different timeline. A refusal or a status about to expire is urgent; a family sponsorship may be planned months ahead.
| Searcher | Typical search | What they need |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse or family sponsor | "spousal sponsorship lawyer", "sponsor parents Canada" | Process, documents, fees, timeline ranges |
| International student or worker | "PR after study permit", "work permit lawyer" | Options for their situation, a consultation |
| Refused applicant | "study permit refused what now", "immigration appeal lawyer" | Fast review of options and deadlines |
| Employer | "hire foreign worker Canada", "LMIA lawyer" | Process for the business, fees, who does what |
| Person with status expiring | "visa expiring Canada lawyer" | An urgent call back |
City pages show where these groups are concentrated, for example Brampton and Kitchener-Waterloo.
Who can charge for immigration help in Canada?
Only authorized representatives. IRCC's page on authorized paid representatives lists them: consultants licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, lawyers who are members of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, notaries in Quebec, and, in Ontario only, paralegals licensed by the Law Society of Ontario.

IRCC's guide to choosing a representative warns that using an unauthorized paid representative may lead IRCC to return or refuse the application. The College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants licenses and regulates immigration and citizenship consultants and international student advisors under the 2019 Act that created it.
- Say on every page that services are provided by lawyers, with each lawyer's name and law society.
- Link to the law society's public directory so people can check licensing themselves.
- Explain in one paragraph why authorization matters, and link to IRCC's guidance.
- If you also employ licensed consultants, say who does what. Ontario rule 4.2-1 commentary says marketing must state whether services are provided by lawyers, paralegals or both.
How do immigration lawyers compete with consultants?
Compete on what is true and checkable: who will handle the file, what the fee covers, and the matters a lawyer can take that a consultant cannot, such as Federal Court litigation. Do not disparage consultants; Ontario and Nova Scotia commentary both list disparaging other practitioners as marketing that may breach the rules.
| Point of comparison | How a law firm can present it |
|---|---|
| Who handles the file | Name the lawyer and any staff who work on it |
| Scope of work | List the applications, appeals and court work the firm takes |
| Refusals and litigation | Explain the review and court options a lawyer can pursue, without promising success |
| Fees | Flat fees by application type, government fees listed separately |
| Languages | List languages lawyers and staff actually speak |
ShoutEx view: many immigration clients first hear about representatives through community networks. Content in their language, and a lawyer who appears at community events, often matters more than ad spend. See LinkedIn and content for the content side.
Which fee models suit immigration law marketing?
Flat fees by application type are the norm for applications and easy to advertise. Refusal reviews and litigation are more often quoted after a consultation. Government processing fees should always be listed separately from professional fees.
| Service | Professional fee | Paid separately |
|---|---|---|
| Spousal sponsorship, inside Canada | $4,500 plus HST | Government fees, translations, medical exam |
| Study permit application | $1,800 plus HST | Government fees, biometrics |
| Work permit, employer-supported | $3,200 plus HST | Government fees, employer compliance fees |
| Refusal review consultation | $300 plus HST | None; credited to any retainer |
In Ontario, fee advertising must say whether disbursements, third-party charges and taxes are extra and must be strictly adhered to. If some clients live outside Canada, confirm the tax treatment with your accountant and state it clearly on the fee page.
Prove you are authorized, then explain the fee.
Immigration clients are wary for good reason. Licence status, a named lawyer and a published fee structure do more for conversion than any slogan.
What does a compliant immigration law ad look like?
A compliant immigration ad names the firm as lawyers, the service and the place, and offers a consultation. It never promises approval, never uses government-style wording that could suggest the firm is IRCC, and never implies a specialty the lawyer does not hold.
Fast-track your PR with Canada's top immigration specialists. 100% success rate.
- "Guaranteed" and "100% success rate" promise an outcome only IRCC controls
- "Experts" and "specialists" imply certification the lawyers may not hold
- "Top" suggests superiority over other representatives
- No sign the service is provided by lawyers
Immigration lawyers licensed in Ontario. Flat fees, government fees listed separately.
- Says "Lawyers" and where they are licensed
- Separates professional and government fees
- Lists languages that staff actually speak
- Offers proof of licensing rather than a promise
A Google Ads note: Google's policy restricts ads for direct acquisition of government documents and services to certified governments and authorized providers, so describe legal representation and advice, not "get your visa here". The bail and government-documents policy is explained on the criminal defence page.
How should immigration law intake handle multilingual and overseas clients?
Offer intake in the languages your team speaks, book across time zones, and collect only what is needed for the conflict check and first assessment. Overseas clients often prefer video consultations and email follow-up.
- Show languages on the website, the Google profile and in ads, only where a lawyer or staff member can actually serve the client.
- Use a booking tool that shows times in the client's time zone.
- Ask for current status, expiry dates and any refusal letters before the consultation, after the conflict check.
- Tell people never to send passports or originals until a retainer is signed.
- Explain in writing how to verify the firm and its lawyers, to protect clients from impersonation scams.
Response speed matters here too, especially for refusals and expiring status. See intake and speed to lead.
What should an immigration law firm measure?
Measure consultations and retainers by application type, by language and by country of the enquirer. Overseas enquiries can be numerous but convert at different rates, so track them separately from local ones.
| Origin | Enquiries | Consults | Retained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside Canada, same region | 142 | 61 | 29 |
| Inside Canada, other provinces | 58 | 22 | 9 |
| Outside Canada | 205 | 34 | 11 |
| Total | 405 | 117 | 49 |
In this example, overseas enquiries are half the volume but less than a quarter of retainers. That might justify separate ad campaigns with their own budgets, or a paid first consultation for overseas enquiries.
Frequently asked questions
Who can charge for immigration help in Canada?
IRCC recognizes licensed consultants, lawyers in a Canadian law society, Quebec notaries and, in Ontario only, LSO-licensed paralegals.
What happens if someone uses an unauthorized representative?
IRCC says it may return or refuse the application. Explaining this on your website helps clients choose safely.
Can an immigration lawyer guarantee approval?
No. IRCC makes the decision, and promising results raises expectations that law-society rules warn against.
Can I call myself an immigration specialist?
Not unless certified by your law society. Ontario bars the specialist label for non-certified lawyers; describe immigration as your area of practice instead.
Should immigration firms publish fees?
ShoutEx view: yes, flat fees by application type, with government fees and taxes listed separately.
Should I advertise in other languages?
Where your lawyers or staff can serve clients in that language, yes. Do not list languages nobody on the team speaks.
Should immigration firms advertise outside Canada?
Some do. Track overseas enquiries separately, because they often convert at different rates from local ones.
How do lawyers compete with immigration consultants?
By naming who handles the file, explaining the work a lawyer can take on, and publishing fees, without disparaging consultants.
