Google Business Profile

What can you put in your Google Business Profile name?

Adding a city or service to a Business Profile name is one of the most common shortcuts in local search, and one of the most likely to cause trouble. This page explains the name rule, shows a stuffed name next to a clean one, and covers what to do when competitors break the rule.

What is the rule for a Business Profile name?

What is the rule for a Business Profile name?

Use the business's real-world name, exactly as it appears on the storefront, website and stationery. Do not add anything else to the name field. Google's guidelines for representing your business set out this rule.

This applies when you create a profile, when someone suggests a change, when you rebrand and when an agency takes over management. Google treats misrepresentation as a reason for enforcement, as its Business Profile policy overview explains.

The name is the field most often abused because it looks like a ranking lever. ShoutEx view: the short-term gain is rarely worth the risk to a profile that took months of reviews to build.

It also matters to customers. People compare the name on the map with the name on the van, the invoice and the door. When they differ, the business looks less trustworthy, and returning customers may struggle to find you again by searching the name they remember.

What must you leave out of the name?

Each of the additions below breaks the name rule. The fix is the same every time: put the information in the field built for it.

What does a stuffed name look like next to a clean one?

Both panels below describe the same fictional plumber. The weak version adds services, a city, hours, capitals and a price claim to the name. The clean version uses the real name and moves every fact into its proper field.

Same business, two profiles. The weak panel is the kind of listing that attracts edits and enforcement. The stronger one says just as much about the business, in the right fields.

What can Google do about a misleading name?

Google's policy overview lists the actions it can take, from rejecting an edit to restricting, suspending or disabling a profile. Misrepresentation and repeated violations are among the reasons it gives.

ActionWhat it means for you
Rejecting contentYour edit to the name is not published
RestrictingSome features or edits are limited
Limiting user contentCustomer contributions on the profile are reduced
Suspending or disablingThe profile stops showing, and you must appeal

There is a consumer law angle too. The Competition Bureau explains that false or misleading representations are judged by the general impression they create, not only their literal words. A name that suggests round-the-clock service or the lowest prices, when neither is true, creates a misleading impression wherever it appears. If a profile is already suspended, follow suspensions and reinstatement.

ShoutEx rule

Earn relevance with content, not with the name field.

Services, categories, the description, your website and reviews all tell Google what you do. None of them put the profile at risk the way a stuffed name does.

What should you do when competitors stuff their names?

Keep your own profile clean, then report the clearest cases. ShoutEx view: competitors with stuffed names are a nuisance, but copying them puts your profile at the same risk.

A local pack with one stuffed name. The first result adds services, a place and hours to its name. The two below it use their real names. Fictional businesses.
  1. Check the competitor's sign, website and invoices. If the long name is genuinely their brand, there is nothing to report.
  2. Take dated screenshots of the profile and of their website showing the real name.
  3. Use the reporting options in Google Maps to suggest the correct name, and keep a log of what you sent.
  4. Spend the time you would have spent arguing on your own reviews and service content.

What should you watch after fixing a name?

After you correct a stuffed name, watch for rejected edits, changes suggested by others, and any drop in the searches you appear for while Google re-reads the profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my city to my Google Business Profile name?

Only if the city is part of the real-world name used on your sign, website and stationery. Otherwise it belongs in the address or service area.

Is keyword stuffing the business name against Google's rules?

Yes. The name field is for the real-world name only, and misrepresentation is one of the reasons Google gives for enforcement.

What if my legal name includes a service word?

That is allowed when the business genuinely uses that name everywhere, including signage and the website.

Can I write my business name in capitals?

No. Google does not allow fully capitalized words in the name, even when the logo uses them.

Should I rebrand to include keywords?

Only for genuine business reasons. A rebrand counts only when the new name is used on the sign, website and stationery, and changing a verified name means verifying again.

How do I report a competitor with a spammy name?

Gather evidence of their real name, then use the reporting options in Google Maps. Keep a dated log of what you reported.

Could a misleading business name break Canadian law?

It can if it creates a false or misleading general impression, such as implying 24-hour service you do not offer. Get legal advice for specific cases.
