How Meta Ads Work: Campaigns, Auction, Learning
Every Meta campaign has three levels: the campaign sets the objective, the ad set sets budget, audience and placements, and the ad holds the creative. Meta runs an auction for each impression and picks the ad most likely to get the result you asked for.
How do Meta Ads work?
You choose an objective, a budget and creative. Meta’s system then shows your ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and its audience network to people it predicts will take that action. The less you restrict it, the more room it has to find them, which is the idea behind Advantage+.
| Level | What you set | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Objective | Leads |
| Ad set | Budget, audience, placements, schedule | $60 a day, Canada, Advantage+ placements |
| Ad | Creative, text, link, form | Reel + instant form |
Which objective should you pick?
Meta groups campaigns into six objectives: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales. Pick the one closest to the action you actually want. A traffic campaign finds people who click; a sales or leads campaign finds people who convert. They are different people.
| Objective | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Awareness | Reaching many people in a market cheaply |
| Traffic | Rarely; clicks are not the goal for most startups |
| Engagement | Building social proof or video views to retarget later |
| Leads | Collecting contact details with forms, calls or messages |
| App promotion | Driving installs and in-app events |
| Sales | Purchases, sign-ups and trials on your site |
How does the Meta ad auction work?
For each impression, Meta compares the ads competing for that person. The winner is the ad with the highest total value: your bid, the estimated chance this person takes the action, and ad quality. Better creative and better conversion data lower your cost, which is why creative and tracking matter more than bid tricks.
What is the learning phase?
After launch or a significant edit, Meta explores who responds. Results swing during this period. Meta says an ad set needs about 50 optimization events in a week to leave learning. With a small budget, optimize for an earlier event, such as a lead instead of a closed deal, so the system gets enough data. See Meta Ads cost for budget sizing.
Optimize for the event you can afford.
If you can’t get about 50 of an event a week, optimize for the step before it. The system needs volume to learn.
How do you launch a first campaign?
- Set up a Business Portfolio, ad account and Facebook Page linked to Instagram.
- Install the Pixel and Conversions API.
- Create one campaign with the sales or leads objective.
- Use one or two ad sets with broad targeting and Advantage+ placements.
- Upload three to five creatives and leave them a week before judging.
