Should you send traffic to a web page or straight to the app store?
Every link and ad for an app has to land somewhere. The App Store and Google Play are built to get an install; a web page is built to explain, compare and capture a company enquiry. Work apps often need both, for different people.
Should app ads point to a website or the app store?
Point install campaigns on phones straight to the store, ideally to a store page tailored to that ad. Point searches made on laptops, comparison searches and anything aimed at a company buyer to a web landing page that shows the result, explains plans and links to both stores.
Most work apps end up with both paths running side by side, each measured on activation and paid accounts, not installs.
When does each landing path fit?
The store page is short and built for one action. A web page can carry sample reports, a comparison table, team pricing, security answers and a demo form. Choose by the person's device and how much they need to know before they will try the app.

The trade-off is friction. Every extra screen loses some people, so a web step has to earn its place by answering questions the store page cannot, or by catching the company buyer who would never install an app just to evaluate it.
| Situation | Send to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phone user searching a task in the store | Store page | They are already one tap from installing |
| Social ad seen on a phone | Custom store page matching the ad | Fewer steps, message stays consistent |
| Google search on a laptop | Web landing page | The store cannot install on a laptop; the page sends a link to the phone |
| Manager comparing tools for a team | Web page with team plans | They need price, admin and security answers first |
| Content readers (how-to articles) | Web page, then store | They came for an answer; show how the app does it |
| Existing user inviting a colleague | Smart link that opens the app or the right store | Keeps the invite context; see referrals |
What should a web landing page for a work app include?
A landing page for an app has two jobs: get the right person to install on the right phone, and give the company buyer a reason to talk to you. Keep the first job above the fold and the second one close behind.
Photos, weather, crew hours and delays in one report the office opens as a PDF.
- Works offline on site
- Free for one user, team plans for crews
- iPhone, iPad and Android
- 1 Headline repeats the search. "Daily site reports" matches what the visitor typed.
- 2 Install path for laptop visitors. A text link or QR code moves them to the phone they will use on site.
- 3 Proof before the install. A sample report shows the output; it does more than a list of features.
- 4 Buyer questions. Offline use, office access and data ownership are what a manager asks first.

When should traffic go straight to the store, and to which page?
When the person is on a phone and the ad already did the convincing, send them to the store. Then make the store page match the ad. Apple's custom product pages let you create up to 70 versions of your product page with different screenshots, promotional text and previews, each with a unique URL you can use in ads, links and Apple Ads; you can also assign keywords so a custom page appears in organic search, and add deep links on iOS 18 and later.
Google Play's custom store listings work in a similar way: up to 50 listings targeted by country, pre-registration, search terms, Google Ads traffic, user behaviour such as churned or lapsed users, or custom audiences, each with its own URL.
Built for general contractors: every crew files the same daily report, and the project folder fills itself.
SiteSnap Field Notes turns photos, weather, crew counts and delays into one daily report. more
Match the landing to the device and the decision.
Phone plus ready to try: store. Laptop or buying for others: web page with a clear path to the store and to a team conversation.
How do you keep attribution across web and store?
The store breaks the click trail: a person leaves your page, installs from Apple or Google, and opens the app without a cookie. Plan how you will join the two halves before you send traffic.
- Tag every link. Use UTM parameters on web links and campaign links in the stores, named the same way everywhere. See UTM tracking.
- On Android, the Play Install Referrer API returns the referrer URL plus click and install timestamps, so the app can record which link sent each install.
- On iOS, use separate custom product page URLs per campaign and read them in App Store Connect sources; tracking across other companies' apps and sites needs permission. See analytics and attribution.
- For laptop visitors, carry a code in the texted link or QR code so a sign-up can be matched to the web visit.
Trade-offs to accept: the web path loses some people at the extra step, and the store path hides some of the buyer research. That is why both should be judged one stage later, at activation.
What should you measure on each path?
| Metric | Question it answers | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Visit to install (web) | Does the page move people to the phone? | Texted-link or QR clicks plus store sources |
| Product page conversion (store) | Does the store page match the ad? | App Store Connect and Play Console, per custom page or listing |
| Activation rate by path | Which path brings real users? | Product analytics with campaign stored at first open |
| Team enquiries by path | Which path reaches buyers? | Web forms and CRM |
| Cost per paying account by path | Which path pays? | Spend plus billing records |

Frequently asked questions
Should Google Ads for an app go to the website or the store?
Use App campaigns for installs on phones, which go to the store. Use Search ads to a web page for laptop searches and for company buyers who want plans and proof first.
Does a landing page lower app installs?
It adds a step, so some people drop off. It is worth it when the page answers questions that stop people from trying, or captures a team enquiry.
What is a custom product page?
An alternative version of your App Store product page with its own screenshots, promotional text and previews and a unique URL. Apple allows up to 70 per app.
What is a custom store listing on Google Play?
A separate listing version shown to a chosen group, such as visitors from one country, certain search terms or Google Ads traffic. Google allows up to 50, each with its own URL.
How do I track installs that start on my website?
Tag links consistently, read the Play Install Referrer on Android, use separate custom page URLs on iOS and store the campaign at first open.
What should a laptop visitor do on an app landing page?
Send the app to their phone by text link or QR code, or book a call if they are buying for a team.
Should the landing page offer a web version?
If your app has a web app for office users, show it. Managers often review reports on a computer, and that view helps sell the team plan.
