GA4 Setup for SaaS Websites

GA4 records events, not sessions and pageviews alone. A good SaaS setup marks a few events as key events, extends data retention, filters internal traffic and links Google Ads. Then it answers which channels bring sign-ups and demos.

How should a SaaS company set up GA4?

Install GA4 through Google Tag Manager, track the actions that matter, and mark three to five as key events: sign-up, demo request, trial start and purchase. Link Google Ads and Search Console. Then the acquisition reports show which sources lead to those events.

Which settings should you change first?

  • Data retention: set to 14 months. Standard properties keep event-level data for 2 or 14 months, which affects explorations and funnels (Google on retention).
  • Internal traffic: define your office and team IPs and activate the filter.
  • Cross-domain: if the app runs on another domain, configure it so sign-ups keep their source.
  • Unwanted referrals: list payment providers so checkouts don’t become referrals.
  • Google signals and consent: set according to your consent setup.

How do you see which channels bring sign-ups?

Use the traffic acquisition and user acquisition reports with key events as the metric. Sources only make sense if campaign links are tagged consistently; see UTM tracking. GA4 shows the website step; revenue by source lives in the CRM, covered in SaaS marketing attribution.

Should you export GA4 to BigQuery?

Yes, early. The export is free to set up on standard properties and keeps raw events beyond GA4’s retention limit. You may never query it in the first year, but you will have the history when you need it. It also feeds dashboards in tools like Looker Studio.

Founder rule

Track fewer events, trust all of them.

Five events you trust beat fifty you have to explain.

What should you check?

  1. Key events firing once per action in DebugView.
  2. Retention set to 14 months.
  3. Internal traffic filtered.
  4. Google Ads and Search Console linked.
  5. BigQuery export switched on.
