Wix vs Squarespace vs WordPress for Small Businesses
Wix and Squarespace are all-in-one builders: hosting, templates and support in one subscription. WordPress is more flexible but needs more care. For most small businesses, the question is how much you will change the site and what you will sell through it.

Which is best for a small business: Wix, Squarespace or WordPress?
Choose Squarespace for a polished, simple site with strong templates that rarely changes. Choose Wix for more layout freedom, apps and built-in business tools such as bookings. Choose WordPress when content, SEO or specific integrations will grow the business and someone can maintain it, or use WordPress.com to reduce that work.
| Scenario | Best fit | Why | Label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consultant or studio portfolio | Squarespace | Strong templates, little upkeep | Editorial |
| Clinic, salon or class bookings | Wix | Built-in bookings and apps | Editorial |
| Restaurant or local service | Wix or Squarespace | Menus, maps, forms, low upkeep | Editorial |
| Local service business growing through SEO content | WordPress | Publishing and SEO control | Editorial |
| Small online shop | Squarespace or Wix; Shopify for bigger catalogues | Checkout included | Editorial |
| Professional firm with custom intake and CRM | WordPress | Integrations and forms | Editorial |
What do they cost?
Squarespace lists Basic at $19, Core $29, Plus $49 and Advanced $99 a month billed annually, per Squarespace pricing. Wix plans run from Light to Business Elite and vary by location, with yearly prices shown from about $18 to $160 a month on October 5, 2026. WordPress.com paid plans run from $4 to $45 a month billed yearly.
| Platform | Entry paid plan | Store-ready plan | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace | $19/mo (Basic) | $29/mo (Core, 0% store fee) | Basic charges 2% on store sales |
| Wix | About $18/mo (Light) | About $30/mo (Core) | Prices vary by location and promotions |
| WordPress.com | $4/mo (Personal) | $45/mo (Commerce) | Plugins on every paid plan |
How much maintenance does each need?
Wix and Squarespace need almost none: the platform handles hosting, security and updates. WordPress.com handles hosting and core updates. Self-hosted WordPress needs regular updates, backups and monitoring. For an owner-run business, low upkeep is often worth more than flexibility.
- Wix and Squarespace: edit content; the platform does the rest.
- WordPress.com: edit content and approve plugin updates.
- Self-hosted WordPress: updates, backups, security and hosting are your job.
When does a small business need outside help?
You will need help when the site must do something the builder does not, such as custom integrations, complex forms, a move to another platform, or recovering lost search traffic. On WordPress you also need help when nobody can keep plugins updated. Plan for help at launch and for any migration.
- Moving platforms without losing search visibility; see the migration SEO checklist.
- Rewriting pages that get visits but no enquiries; see the conversion checklist.
- Connecting forms to a CRM or booking system.
- Fixing slow pages caused by heavy themes or apps.
Low upkeep is a feature.
For an owner-run business, the platform that needs no attention often beats the one with more options.
Which is best for SEO?
All three can rank well for local and small business searches. WordPress gives the most control over URLs, structured data and content templates. Wix and Squarespace cover the basics, such as titles, descriptions, sitemaps and redirects, but limit some advanced settings. The details are in our SEO comparison, and full costs in the cost guide.
