Google Business Profile for Dental Clinics

For many patients the Google Business Profile is the first thing they see about your clinic: the map, the hours, the phone number and the reviews. This page covers what Google allows for dental clinics and individual dentists, and how to make the profile work with your ads.

Why does a Google Business Profile matter for a dental clinic?

Why does a Google Business Profile matter for a dental clinic?

Because it powers the map pack and the panel people see when they search for your clinic by name. Calls, directions and website visits often start there rather than on your site.

For urgent and near-me searches the profile can decide the booking on its own: hours, distance, the call button and reviews are all visible before anyone reaches your website.

What a phone shows first: name, rating, category and hours. A clinic that keeps late hours current wins the evening search. All clinics are fictional.

What can a dental clinic call its Google Business Profile?

Use the clinic's real-world name and nothing else. Google's guidelines for representing your business do not allow keywords, locations or taglines in the business name, so words such as "emergency", a neighbourhood or "family dentist" only belong there if they are part of the name on your signage and letterhead.

A trade name must also follow your regulator. Alberta's rules, for example, stop a trade name implying a specialty unless it is accurate and authorized. See dental advertising rules by province.

Should each dentist at a clinic have their own profile?

Google allows practitioners who work at a clinic to have their own profile, titled with the practitioner's name only. That can help patients who search for a dentist by name, but each profile also collects its own reviews and needs upkeep, so decide deliberately.

When a dentist leaves, update or close their profile so patients are not sent to someone who no longer practises there.

How should a dental clinic fill in its Google Business Profile?

Fill in every field that is true and keep it identical to the website. Accuracy beats volume: a correct phone number and current hours matter more than fifty photos.

A reception desk and lobby in a professional office

Photos of your own reception, rooms and team help patients picture the visit. Avoid stock images and never post patients without explicit written consent.

  • Primary category: Dentist or Dental clinic. Add specialist categories only for specialists who practise there.
  • Services: list the services you offer, using plain names that match your website pages.
  • Hours and holiday hours: keep both current, including any emergency or after-hours arrangements you really offer.
  • Booking link: point it to your booking page, not the homepage.
  • Attributes: accessibility and languages only where accurate.
  • Description: who you serve, general dentist or specialist, coverage and billing, without superlatives or offers.
  • Questions and reviews: reply calmly and never confirm that a reviewer is a patient. See reviews for dentists.
ShoutEx rule

Treat the profile like a second homepage.

Someone should own it, check it monthly and update it the same day hours, dentists or services change.

How does a Google Business Profile connect to Google Ads?

Linking the profile to Google Ads lets search ads show the clinic's address, distance and map through location assets. For a local service like dentistry, that extra line often answers the patient's first question: is it close?

Location in the ad: with the profile linked, Google can add the address and distance below an ad like this. The ad itself stays factual and discloses general dentists. Fictional clinic.

Location assets only work when the profile is accurate, so fix the profile first. Campaign setup is covered in Google Ads for dentists, and urgent searches in emergency campaigns.

What can a dental clinic post on its Google Business Profile?

Post practical updates: new dentists joining, extended hours, holiday closures, a new service, CDCP participation or a reminder about what to do in a dental emergency. Treat every post as advertising under your regulator's rules.

"Dr. Lee, general dentist, joins us on Tuesdays and Thursdays""Our award-winning team welcomes Dr. Lee"

Social media follows the same logic; see social media for dental clinics. This page is general marketing guidance, not legal advice. Check your own regulator's current rules before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add keywords to my dental clinic's Google profile name?

No. Google allows only the real business name, without keywords, locations or taglines. Adding them risks suspension and may break dental advertising rules.

Can each dentist have a Google Business Profile?

Practitioners at a clinic may have their own profile titled with their name only. Decide whether the extra profiles are worth maintaining.

How should a solo dentist name the profile?

If the practice has a brand name and one dentist, Google's format is "[Brand]: [Practitioner name]".

What category should a dental clinic choose?

Dentist or Dental clinic as the primary category. Add specialist categories only for specialists who actually practise there.

Why link the profile to Google Ads?

It lets ads show your address, distance and map through location assets, which helps local patients choose.

Can a dental clinic post offers on its Google profile?

Not discounts or free services in Ontario or Nova Scotia, and not coupons or time-limited discounts in Newfoundland and Labrador. Post factual updates such as hours, new dentists and services.

How often should we update the profile?

Whenever hours, dentists or services change, and before every holiday. Review the whole profile monthly.

Can we post photos of patients on our profile?

Only with explicit consent and within your regulator's rules. Photos of the clinic and team are safer and still useful.
