Direct Mail for Law Firms
Direct mail reaches households and businesses before they search: homeowners who have never made a will, buyers in new subdivisions, founders of new companies. It works for planned legal needs when it is targeted, plainly worded and tracked, and it must never target people in distress.
Does direct mail work for law firms?
Direct mail works for law firms when it reaches people with a planned legal need near the office and gives them a specific, factual reason to book: a will after buying a home, a lawyer for a closing in a new subdivision, or a shareholder agreement for a new company. It works poorly as a generic "full-service law firm" flyer.
Mail suits these matters because people put them off until something prompts them. A clear card with fees explained and an easy booking route is that prompt. The broader evidence on whether mail still pays is in our guide to whether direct mail still works.
Who should a law firm mail?
Mail the households or businesses that match a practice area you want to grow and can reach by area or lawful list: homeowners for wills and estates, new-build neighbourhoods ahead of closings, and new companies for business law. Each group needs its own card.
| Audience | How to reach | Message | Practice page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homeowners near the office | Canada Post Neighbourhood Mail by postal code and building type | Update your will and powers of attorney | Wills and estates |
| New-build neighbourhoods | Neighbourhood Mail to the new streets | A lawyer for your closing, fees quoted in writing | Real estate law |
| New businesses | Addressed mail to lawfully sourced business addresses | Shareholder agreements and first contracts | Business law |
| Past clients | Your own client list, with care | A new office, new lawyer or new practice area | See privacy below |
Canada Post's Neighbourhood Mail delivers unaddressed mail by area, neighbourhood or postal code, with filters for building type, age and household income. Delivery was disrupted when the postal union banned it from September 15, 2025 during the labour dispute, so confirm current availability before you plan dates.
Who should a law firm never mail?
Never mail people because they are in distress. Ontario's rules bar lawyers from using means that take advantage of a vulnerable person or someone who has suffered a traumatic experience and has not yet had a chance to recover, and from means that amount to coercion, duress or harassment. Other provinces have similar rules.
| Do not mail | Why | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| People named in accident reports | Traumatic experience, no time to recover | Be findable in search when they look |
| People recently arrested or charged | Vulnerable and under pressure | Clear after-hours phone line and criminal defence page |
| Spouses in a recent separation | Distress; possible conflict with the other party | Calm family law pages and a fast consultation path |
| People who already have a lawyer on the matter | Rules bar urging them to switch unless they initiate | Do not target them |
The full rule text is in law firm marketing rules by province. Practice areas built on urgent moments, such as criminal defence, rely on search and intake instead of mail.
What should a law firm postcard say?
A law firm postcard should name who it is for, state one need that applies to them, say that lawyers provide the service, explain how fees work, and show a QR code and web address that lead to a matching page. It should not rank the firm, promise an outcome or use a title such as "specialist".
Our lawyers prepare wills and powers of attorney for property and personal care. Fees are quoted in writing before you book, with HST and any disbursements listed. Evening appointments on Tuesdays.

123 Example Ave
Hamilton ON
| Avoid on a law firm postcard | Use instead |
|---|---|
| "Hamilton's top estate lawyers" | "Wills and powers of attorney with lawyers ten minutes from your street" |
| "Wills from $199" with nothing else | "Fees quoted in writing; HST and disbursements listed" |
| "Protect your family before it's too late" over a worried photo | "A home changes your estate plan" with a photo of the office |
| A client quote praising the firm | A link to your fees page and Google profile |
Mail a plan, not a crisis.
Wills for homeowners, closings in new neighbourhoods and agreements for new companies are needs people plan for. A postcard is a welcome reminder there and an intrusion anywhere else.
Can a law firm mail its past clients, and what privacy rules apply?
Yes, with care. Neighbourhood mail uses no personal information, but addressed mail does. The federal PIPEDA covers how private-sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in commercial activity; Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own private-sector laws. Lawyers also owe confidentiality to clients, which goes further than privacy law.
- Past clients: mail about firm news, such as a new office or practice area, not about their own matter.
- Envelopes and cards: nothing on the outside of mail should reveal that the person was a client or what their matter was.
- Bought lists: ask how the list was compiled and whether it can lawfully be used for marketing.
- Follow-up email: Canada's anti-spam law applies. The CRTC's CASL guidance explains that implied consent from an existing business relationship lasts 2 years after a purchase and 6 months after an inquiry, the sender must be identified, and unsubscribes must be processed within 10 business days.
Intake forms that collect consent for newsletters are covered in intake and speed to lead. This is general marketing guidance, not legal or privacy advice for your firm.
How do you track a law firm postcard campaign?
Give each mailing its own QR code and short web address, send them to a page that matches the card, ask every caller how they heard of you, and match new clients against the mailing area. With those steps you can work out the cost per retained matter for each mailing.
| Step | Number | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Postcards delivered | 3,000 | Single-family homes near the office |
| QR scans and web visits | 45 | Unique QR code per card |
| Calls mentioning the postcard | 10 | Asked on every new call |
| Consultations booked | 16 | Online and by phone |
| Wills retained | 12 | Matched to mailed addresses |
Send scans to a page that continues the card's message, not the homepage; our guide to tracking direct mail covers the method. With Yotru, every postcard carries its own QR code, so a scan tells you which household responded and the office can be ready for the call.
How can a law firm send postcards with Yotru?
Yotru designs, prints, mails and tracks personalized postcards with a unique QR code for every recipient. A firm chooses the households or businesses, writes one factual message within its law society's rules, and sees which recipients scanned. It suits small tests: one neighbourhood of homeowners for wills, or the streets of a new subdivision before closings.
| Step | What the firm does | What Yotru does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Audience | Pick homeowners, new-build streets or new businesses; never people in distress | Personalizes each postcard |
| 2. Message | One need, "lawyers", how fees work, no rankings | Designs the postcard |
| 3. Mailing | Choose timing, such as spring for wills or before closing season | Prints and mails the postcards |
| 4. Tracking | Have the booking page and phone ready | A unique QR code per recipient, with scan tracking |
| 5. Review | Compare cost per retained matter with search ads | Campaign results to compare |
Start small. Mail one area, count scans, consultations and retained matters, and decide from cost per matter whether to repeat. You can create a Yotru campaign when you are ready. This is general marketing guidance, not legal or ethics advice; check your law society's current rules before you publish.
