Google Business Profile for Law Firms

For many people the Google Business Profile is the first thing they see about your firm: the map, the hours, the phone number and the reviews. This page covers what Google allows for law firms and individual lawyers, and how the profile works with your ads.

Why does a Google Business Profile matter for a law firm?

Why does a Google Business Profile matter for a law firm?

Because it powers the map pack and the panel people see when they search for your firm by name. Calls, directions and website visits often start there rather than on your site.

For "lawyer near me" searches the profile can decide the call on its own: distance, hours, the call button and reviews are visible before anyone opens your website.

What a phone shows first: name, rating, category and hours. A firm that keeps evening hours current wins the after-work search. All firms are fictional.

What can a law firm call its Google Business Profile?

Use the firm's real-world name and nothing else. Google's guidelines for representing your business do not allow keywords, locations, taglines, phone numbers or URLs in the business name. "Family law" or a city belongs there only if it is part of the name on your letterhead and signage.

The firm name itself is marketing under law society rules, so it cannot suggest a specialty or superiority either. See marketing rules by province.

Should each lawyer at a firm have their own profile?

Google allows practitioners who are public-facing and reachable at the location to have their own profile. At a firm with several lawyers, that profile is titled with the lawyer's name only. It can help people who search for a lawyer by name, but each profile collects its own reviews and needs upkeep.

Decide before a lawyer leaves who will update their profile, and agree it in writing. A stale profile sends clients to the wrong person.

How should a law firm fill in its Google Business Profile?

Fill in every field that is true and keep it identical to the website. Accuracy beats volume: the right phone number and current hours matter more than fifty photos.

A corporate office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city

Photos of your own reception, meeting rooms and team help people picture a first meeting, especially if they have never hired a lawyer. Avoid stock images and never post a client without written consent.

  • Primary category: the closest fit for the office, such as a law firm or the practice-area category Google offers. Many practice-area categories use the US word "attorney"; choose by meaning.
  • Services: list the matters you handle, using the same names as your practice pages.
  • Hours: office hours plus holiday hours. Only show after-hours availability you really staff.
  • Booking link: point it to your consultation page, not the homepage.
  • Description: practice areas, languages, whether services are by lawyers, paralegals or both, and how consultations work.
  • Reviews: reply without confirming the person was a client. See reviews for law firms.
ShoutEx rule

Give the profile an owner.

One named person checks it monthly and updates it the same day hours, lawyers, offices or phone numbers change.

How does a Google Business Profile connect to Google Ads?

Linking the profile to Google Ads lets search ads show the office address and distance through location assets. For a local matter such as a will or a home closing, that extra line answers an early question: can I get to this office easily?

Location in the ad: with the profile linked, Google can add the address and distance below an ad like this. The ad stays factual and says "Lawyers". Fictional firm.

Location assets only help when the profile is accurate, so fix the profile first. Campaign setup is in Google Ads for law firms.

What can a law firm post on its Google Business Profile?

Post practical updates: a lawyer joining, new evening hours, a new office, a holiday closure, a change in consultation fees, or a short explainer on a common process. Treat every post as marketing under your law society's rules.

Answer questions people ask on the profile in general terms and move anything about a specific matter to a private call. For neighbourhood-level plans, see Toronto. This is general marketing guidance, not legal or ethics advice; check your law society's current rules before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add keywords to my law firm's Google profile name?

No. Google allows only the real business name, without keywords, locations or taglines. Adding them risks suspension and can also breach law society marketing rules.

Can each lawyer have a Google Business Profile?

Lawyers who are public-facing and reachable at the office may have their own profile. At a firm with several lawyers it is titled with the lawyer's name only.

How should a solo lawyer name the profile?

If the practice has a firm name and one lawyer, Google's format is "[Firm]: [Lawyer name]".

What category should a law firm choose?

The closest primary category for the office, such as a law firm or a practice-area category. Add secondary categories only for work the office really does.

Why link the profile to Google Ads?

It lets ads show your address and distance through location assets, which helps people choose an office they can reach.

Can a law firm post past results on its profile?

Only with a clear statement that past results do not necessarily indicate future results and that outcomes depend on the facts. Many firms leave results out of profile posts.

How often should we update the profile?

Whenever hours, lawyers, offices or fees change, and before each holiday. Review the whole profile monthly.

Can we answer legal questions in the profile Q&A?

Keep answers general, such as how to book or what to bring. Move anything about a specific matter to a private conversation.
