Google Ads for Law Firms
Google Ads puts a law firm in front of people at the moment they look for a lawyer. This guide covers which practice areas to advertise, how to build the first campaign, the law society rules every ad must meet, and how to tell whether the spend turns into retained matters.
Do Google Ads work for law firms?
Yes, for practice areas people search for when they need a lawyer soon: a separation, a criminal charge, a closing date, a will or a dismissal. A search ad reaches that person as they decide whom to call.
It disappoints firms that bid on "lawyer", send every click to the homepage or let calls go to voicemail.

CallWhich practice areas should a law firm advertise on Google?
Advertise the practice areas people search for by name, where your firm has capacity and a clear way to quote fees. Family law, criminal defence, immigration, residential real estate, wills and estates, employment and business law each behave differently in search. Personal injury is not covered in this guide.
| Practice area | How people search | ShoutEx view |
|---|---|---|
| Family law | "separation lawyer" + city, all year | Core campaign; calm tone |
| Criminal defence | Urgent, on phones, often at night | Strong only if someone answers |
| Immigration | Program names, deadlines, languages | Good with language pages |
| Residential real estate | "real estate lawyer" + city | Volume; Ontario price ads all-inclusive |
| Wills and estates | "wills lawyer", "probate" + city | Good with clear fixed fees |
| Employment | "wrongful dismissal lawyer" + city | Strong on the employee side |
| Business law | "incorporation lawyer", agreements | Fewer searches, higher value |
Check monthly searches and bid ranges for your city in Google's Keyword Planner, then compare them with what a retained matter is worth. Practice pages such as family law marketing and criminal defence marketing cover each area.
How should a law firm set up its first Google Ads campaign?
Start with one Search campaign for the practice area you most want to grow, two or three ad groups for the matters inside it, a matching page for each, call and form tracking, and ad hours that match when someone can take an intake call. Run urgent work such as criminal defence as its own campaign.
- Choose the matters and the area, such as separations within 25 km of the office.
- Pick keywords that name the matter and the place.
- Write ads that repeat the search and say "lawyer".
- Build one page per matter with an easy way to book.
- Track consultations, then retained matters.
- Set the budget from fees per retained matter.
Bids are only part of the price. Google's Ad Rank documentation explains that ad quality and landing page experience affect position and cost, so a precise ad leading to a precise page can beat a bigger budget.
Practice-area, place and urgent keywords, plus negatives that filter out job seekers and students.

Read the guideWhat marketing rules apply to law firm Google Ads?
Two sets of rules apply: Google's policies decide who may advertise, and your law society decides what a lawyer's ad may say. The second set is usually the stricter one.
- Say "lawyer". Ontario requires marketing to identify that the person is licensed as a lawyer.
- No superiority or invented titles such as "best", "#1", "leading", "specialist" or "expert" unless certified.
- No raised expectations such as "we win" or "aggressive".
- Precise fees that say whether disbursements and taxes are extra.
- Google's limits: bail bond services cannot advertise; criminal defence can.

- "#1" and "best" are superlative rankings.
- "Experts" implies a certification.
- "Aggressive", "We Win" and "guaranteed" raise expectations.
Family lawyers for separation and divorce. 60-minute consultation, $250 plus HST.
- Names the matter and the city, and identifies the firm as lawyers.
- Describes services, not outcomes or rankings.
- The fee is precise and says tax is extra.
The province-by-province detail is on law firm marketing rules by province. This is general marketing guidance, not legal or ethics advice; check your law society's current rules before you publish.
Advertise the matters you can take on next week.
Google Ads can fill a calendar quickly. Decide first which lawyers have room, which matters you want and who answers the phone, then spend there.
What could Google Ads return for a law firm?
The return depends on cost per enquiry, the share that book a consultation, the share that retain, and fees per matter. Replace the editable presets with your own figures.
Estimate what your marketing budget could generate in enquiries, consultations, retained clients and fees.
Illustrative estimate only. Actual results depend on your practice areas, market, competition, intake speed and matter value. No outcome is guaranteed. The presets are editable examples, not industry benchmarks. Start from your own numbers where you have them. Repeat-matter multiplier in this example: 2x.
At these assumptions, $5,000 a month could bring about 8.2 retained clients and $40,909 in first-year fees. Want help turning this budget into retained matters? ShoutEx can help you plan and run the acquisition strategy.
Talk to ShoutExHow should a law firm measure Google Ads?
Measure cost per retained matter, not clicks or cost per call. A campaign with expensive calls can still be the best one if those callers sign a retainer.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per retained matter | Whether the channel pays | Practice management software plus ad spend |
| Consultation booking rate | Whether intake and pages convert | Call notes and booking records |
| Cost per enquiry | Efficiency of ads and pages | Google Ads conversions |
| Answered call rate | Whether callers reach a person | Call reporting |
| Search term quality | Whether keywords match real matters | Search terms report |
Google cannot see which callers retained the firm. Use offline conversion imports to send back which clicks became retained matters, so bidding learns what a real client looks like. Send only the click identifier, a conversion name, the time and a value, never names or facts of a matter. The law firm method is in call and intake tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Do Google Ads work for law firms?
Yes for practice areas people search for by name, such as family law, criminal defence, immigration, real estate and wills. Results depend on keywords, wording, landing pages, answered calls and tracking.
Which practice area should a firm advertise first?
The one with the most searches in your city that your lawyers have capacity for, and a clear fee or consultation process. For many general firms that is family law or wills and estates.
Do my ads have to say lawyer?
In Ontario, marketing must identify that the person is licensed as a lawyer. Putting "lawyer" or "lawyers" in a headline is the simplest way to do it, and it helps searchers too.
Can I call my firm the best or number one in an ad?
No. Law societies treat superlatives such as best and number one as rankings or claims of superiority that are likely to mislead. Describe services, location, languages and fees instead.
Can I use the word specialist in Google Ads?
Only if a law society has certified the lawyer as a specialist. In Ontario that means LSO certification; Alberta and Nova Scotia bar specialist and expert claims in lawyer advertising.
How much should a law firm spend on Google Ads?
Enough to produce a meaningful number of consultations in two to three months at local click prices. Work it out from Keyword Planner estimates and the fees a retained matter brings.
Can a law firm advertise bail services on Google?
No. Google does not allow bail bond services to advertise. Criminal defence representation by lawyers is not affected by that policy.
Does this guide cover personal injury advertising?
No. Personal injury marketing is out of scope for this guide. The other practice areas are covered in their own pages.
How long before Google Ads brings clients?
Calls can start within days. Judge the channel after two to three months, once you can compare spend with retained matters rather than clicks.
Who is responsible if an agency writes a non-compliant ad?
The lawyer. Marketing on the firm's behalf is the lawyer's responsibility, so review every ad before it runs.
