Website Design for Law Firms

Every channel ends at your website: ads send clicks to it, referrals check it and AI assistants read it. This page covers what a law firm site needs to turn a visit into a booked consultation while staying inside law society marketing rules.

Your website counts as marketing under law society rules, so every claim must be verifiable

What should a law firm website include?

A law firm website should include a homepage that says which matters you handle and where, a page per practice area and common matter, a page for each lawyer, a fees and consultations page, office and access details, and a booking path visible on every page. It should also say clearly whether services are provided by lawyers, paralegals or both.

  1. Headline names the practice area, the matter and the city. Visitors know at once whether the firm fits.
  2. Who does the work. Lawyers, paralegals or both is a disclosure the rules expect.
  3. Facts, not rankings. Years, team size and languages can be checked; these are invented.
  4. Services as plain descriptions. Each links to its own matter page.
  5. A conflict-check form. Name, contact, other party and matter type, nothing confidential.
Mock-up note: a homepage wireframe for a fictional Halifax firm. The consultation fee is precise and says tax is extra. No testimonials, rankings or superlatives, so it suits the strictest provinces. Replace every fact with your own.

How should a law firm website be structured?

Give each practice area, common matter, lawyer and office one clear page, link them from the main menu, and keep the phone number and booking button visible everywhere. That helps people find their situation, gives ads and the Google profile a precise destination, and helps search engines and assistants understand the firm.

Photos matter as well. Real photos of your own office, meeting rooms and lawyers tell someone who has never hired a lawyer what a first meeting will feel like.

How fast should a law firm respond to website enquiries?

Within the hour during office hours, and say on the form when you will reply. Research published in Harvard Business Review found that firms contacting online leads within an hour were far more likely to qualify them than firms that waited longer. People with a legal problem often contact several firms the same day, and the first useful reply usually wins the consultation.

Short enquiry formSimple, works with any practice softwareNeeds a reply within the hour

Choose only the routes your team can answer reliably. A form nobody checks until the next morning does more harm than no form. The intake process behind the website is covered in intake and speed to lead.

What can a law firm website say under marketing rules?

A law firm website can describe practice areas, matters, lawyers, languages, offices, years in practice and fees, as long as each statement is true and verifiable. Lawyers may describe a preferred or restricted practice and experience that is demonstrably true. Avoid superiority claims, raised expectations, emotional testimonials and any specialist title the law society has not granted.

AvoidWrite instead
"Halifax's leading family law firm""Family lawyers in Halifax since 2012"
"Family law specialists" (not certified)"Our practice is restricted to family law"
"We fight aggressively for you""We negotiate agreements and represent clients in court when needed"
"Recovered $1.2 million for a client" on its ownThe amount plus a statement that past results do not necessarily indicate future results and outcomes vary with the facts
"Wills from $299""Basic will: $450, plus HST; disbursements extra and listed on our fees page"

Fee wording has its own rules. Ontario expects fee marketing to be reasonably precise, to say whether disbursements and taxes are extra, and to be honoured; residential real estate prices must be all-inclusive apart from listed items. See real estate law marketing and marketing rules by province. This is general marketing guidance, not legal or ethics advice; check your law society's current rules before you publish.

ShoutEx rule

Your website is the receptionist who never goes home.

Every page should answer the next question someone would ask on the phone, then offer the next step: call, book a consultation or send a short enquiry.

How should a law firm handle website forms and confidentiality?

Design forms for a conflict check, not a case history. Until you have confirmed you can act, ask only for what you need to check conflicts and call back, and tell people not to send details of their situation.

  • Ask for name, phone or email, the other party's name and the type of matter.
  • Do not ask for facts of the matter, documents or uploads on the first form.
  • Separate marketing consent. A newsletter checkbox should be its own, unticked, with plain wording.
  • Keep tracking tags general. Analytics should record that a form was sent, not which matter it concerned.
  • Choose secure tools for forms and booking, and know where their data is stored.

Our guide to consent and privacy in analytics covers the tracking side, and consultation booking covers what happens after the form.

How can a law firm website turn more visitors into consultations?

A law firm site books more consultations when every page ends with a relevant next step, the phone number is tap-to-call on mobile, the form is short, office hours are visible and the questions that stop people calling are answered: cost, timing, who they will meet and what to bring.

Frequently asked questions

What should a law firm website include?

The matters you handle and where, a page per practice area and matter, lawyer pages, a fees and consultations page, office details, and an easy way to book.

Can I put client testimonials on my law firm website?

Be cautious. Law societies warn against testimonials or endorsements with emotional appeals, and Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia flag them in their rules. Factual information is safer.

Should a law firm website publish fees?

Publishing consultation and fixed fees helps people decide. Make each fee precise, say whether disbursements and taxes are extra, and honour it.

What should a law firm contact form ask?

Name, phone or email, the other party's name for a conflict check and the type of matter. Ask people not to send details until you confirm you can act.

How fast should we reply to website enquiries?

Within the hour during office hours. Research in Harvard Business Review found much better results from contacting online leads within an hour.

Can I say our firm specializes in employment law?

Not unless a lawyer is a certified specialist. You can say the practice is restricted to or focused on employment law if that is true.

Should the website say if paralegals do the work?

Yes. Ontario's commentary treats failing to state whether services are provided by lawyers, paralegals or both as a breach.

Should I redesign or fix my current website?

Fix wording, structure, booking paths and reply times first. Redesign when the platform stops you making those changes easily.
