Call and Intake Tracking for Law Firm Google Ads
Most legal enquiries start with a phone call. If Google Ads cannot see which calls became consultations and retained matters, it optimizes for clicks. This page shows what to track and how to send outcomes back while protecting confidentiality.
Why do law firms need call tracking for Google Ads?
Because most legal enquiries are phone calls, especially in criminal, family and immigration matters. Without call tracking, a campaign that fills the consultation calendar by phone looks like it produced nothing, and one that brings form spam looks like a success.
Good tracking answers three questions: which searches made the phone ring, which calls became consultations, and which consultations became retained matters. The first is automatic once call assets and website call tracking are in place. The other two need intake's help.
This is how you protect the budget. The cost guide sets a ceiling per retained matter; without tracking you cannot tell whether you are under it.
How do call assets work for a law firm?
A call asset adds your phone number or a call button to search ads. Google's call asset documentation says the number must appear on your website or your domain must be verified, call reporting uses Google forwarding numbers, and the asset can be scheduled to show only during business hours. For a firm, schedule it to the hours a person answers.

- Schedule the asset to real answering hours, not office hours if intake closes earlier.
- Set a minimum call length that separates real enquiries from wrong numbers, then test it against your intake log.
- Track calls from the website too, so visitors who read the page and then call are counted.
- Keep one main number on your Google Business Profile and printed materials.
Which calls and consultations should a firm count as conversions?
Count three levels, and tell Google which one matters most. Enquiries arrive quickly and give the system data. Consultations held show the enquiry was real and passed the conflict check. Retained matters are what the firm earns from. Make the deepest level you can measure reliably the primary goal.
| Action name | Source | Primary or secondary | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call from ad (90+ seconds) | Call asset | Primary at first | Filters wrong numbers and hang-ups |
| Call from website | Website forwarding number | Primary at first | Visitors who read the page then call |
| Form submitted | Landing page | Secondary once stage 2 is imported | Contact details and conflict name only |
| Stage 2 | Imported from intake log | Primary when volume allows | Consultation held |
| Stage 3 | Imported from intake log | Primary for value bidding | Retained; optional value band, never matter details |
Keep practice areas apart in reporting by keeping them in separate campaigns, as shown in the keyword guide.
How do you import retained matters into Google Ads?
Capture the Google click ID (GCLID) with each web enquiry, store it with the intake record, and upload a stage name and date when the matter moves forward. Google's offline conversion imports match the upload to the original click, so bidding learns which searches bring clients who retain.
- Add a hidden GCLID field to every form and booking tool that allows it.
- Store it on the intake record in your practice management system.
- Each week, export records that reached stage 2 or 3 with click ID, stage and date only.
- Upload in Google Ads, or schedule the upload from a sheet.
- Check the import report for errors and unmatched clicks.
If it is not tracked, bidding will optimize for the wrong client.
Automated bidding finds more of whatever you count. Count clicks and you get clicks. Count consultations held and retained matters and you start getting clients.
How do you protect client confidentiality when tracking?
Design tracking so the ad platform never learns who a client is or what the matter is about. A click ID with "Stage 3" tells Google that an anonymous click became valuable; a name with "retained for divorce" tells it something the firm owes a duty to protect.
| Send | Never send |
|---|---|
| GCLID from the ad click | Client names, emails or phone numbers |
| Neutral stage names such as "Stage 2" | Matter types such as "divorce" or "criminal" |
| Date and time of the stage change | Opposing parties, courts or file numbers |
| An optional value band if you use value bidding | Notes, call recordings or intake answers |
Phone calls without a click ID can stay in Google's own call reporting and your intake log. Call recordings carry the same confidentiality risk, so many firms rely on the log instead. This is not legal or ethics advice; check your law society. The intake guide covers the intake process itself.
What should intake log for each new enquiry?
Intake should log source, practice area, conflict check result and outcome for every new enquiry. That log turns call counts into matter data and shows patterns no dashboard will, such as callers asking about a practice area you do not advertise.
| Field | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| How did you hear about us? | Google ad, Google Maps, referral, directory | Separates paid from unpaid sources |
| Practice area | Family, wills, employment | Matches the call to a campaign |
| Conflict check | Clear, conflict, pending | Explains enquiries that could not book |
| Consultation held? | Yes, no-show, declined | Feeds stage 2 |
| Retained? | Yes, no, referred out | Feeds stage 3 |
Once a month, set the log beside the search terms report. If "referred out" keeps appearing for one kind of search, add it as a negative.
Frequently asked questions
Do law firms need call tracking for Google Ads?
Yes. Most legal enquiries are phone calls. Without call tracking, campaigns that fill your calendar by phone look like they produced nothing.
Will Google forwarding numbers confuse clients?
Rarely. The forwarding number rings your firm. Keep your main number on your Google Business Profile and printed materials.
Is it safe to upload retained matters to Google Ads?
Upload only the click ID, a neutral stage name and a date. Never upload names, contact details or matter types, and confirm the approach with your law society's practice advisors.
What is a GCLID?
The Google click ID added to your landing page address when someone clicks an ad. Storing it with the enquiry lets you report the outcome later without sending personal details.
What call length should count as a conversion?
Set a minimum that separates real enquiries from wrong numbers, for example 60 to 120 seconds (illustrative), then test it against your intake log.
Should I record calls from ads?
Be cautious. Calls can contain confidential information, so you need clear notice and secure storage. Many firms rely on an intake log instead.
Which conversion should Google Ads optimize for?
The deepest one you can measure reliably: retained matters if you import them, otherwise consultations held or qualified calls.
