How much does Google Ads cost for a law firm?

What does a law firm pay for Google Ads?

Whatever budget it sets, but the price of each click depends on the city, the practice area and how many firms bid on the same searches. Google publishes no average cost per click for lawyers, so the reliable method is to check your own keywords in Keyword Planner and plan backwards from the fees on a retained matter.

Search campaigns charge when someone clicks, and calls from a call asset are charged like clicks. The table shows how the arithmetic works at different budgets. It is a model, not a forecast.

How budget, cost per click and enquiry rate interactAssumed numbers to show the arithmetic
Monthly budgetAssumed cost per clickClicksAssumed enquiry rateEnquiriesCost per enquiry
$2,000$82507%18$114
$4,000$123338%27$150

$12,000$206009%54$222

The point of the table is scale. If your clicks cost more than the assumed figure and only one in fifteen becomes a call or form, a small budget produces too few enquiries to judge the channel in a month or two.

How much can a law firm afford to pay per click?

A firm can afford to pay up to the fees on a retained matter multiplied by three rates: the share of clicks that enquire, the share of enquiries that book a consultation, and the share of consultations that retain. Then set a ceiling well below break-even, because fees are not profit and lawyer time is limited.

Worked example: what one click is worth to a family law firmOne firm's assumptions, before the cost of doing the work
StepValueRunning result
Average fees on a retained separation matter$6,000$6,000 per retained client
Retain rate (consultation to retainer)40%$2,400 per consultation
Consult rate (enquiry to booked consult, after conflict check)45%$1,080 per enquiry
Click-to-enquiry rate8%$86.40 per click
Target: spend no more than 20% of fees on acquisition20%$17.28 maximum average cost per click

The last row is a business decision, not a rule. Repeat clients and referrals justify a higher ceiling, which is why the Google Ads for law firms page includes a calculator with a repeat-matter multiplier.

How does cost differ between practice areas?

Each practice area is a different auction with different economics. Judge each campaign on its own cost per retained matter, not on cost per click, because a cheap click on a low-fee matter can cost more per dollar of fees than an expensive click on a large file.

Practice areaWhat shapes the costJudge it on
FamilyMany firms, emotional and urgent searchesCost per retained matter and fees per file
CriminalUrgent searches, often after hoursCalls answered and retained within days
ImmigrationLanguage and application type vary widelyConsultations held per language and file type
Real estatePrice comparison, many small filesCost per closing against your all-inclusive fee
Wills and estatesPlanned, steady, lower fees per fileCost per signed package, plus estate work later
Employment and businessFewer searches, larger mattersConsultations held and matter value over a quarter

Practice-area pages such as real estate law marketing and wills and estates marketing explain how each kind of client decides.

How should a law firm split its Google Ads budget?

Split by campaign according to matter value and proven results. Give most of the budget to the practice area that brings retained files at an acceptable cost, keep a share for one test at a time and keep brand spend small. Review the split monthly once you have enough consultations to compare.

Example monthly split for a $6,000 multi-practice accountIllustrative only
Starting split
Family$3,000Core practice, steady demand
Wills and estates$1,200Planned work, all week
Employment (employees)$1,500Test, larger files
Brand$300Protects your name
After three months of data
Family$3,300Lowest cost per retained file
Wills and estates$900Trimmed to weekdays
Employment (employees)$1,600Kept; consults retain well
Brand$200Lower need

The second row shows what a rebalance can look like after real data, not what yours will show.

ShoutEx rule

Set the budget from the matter, then check the clicks.

Work out what a retained matter is worth and how many new files your lawyers can take. Then check whether your market can deliver enough clicks at a price that leaves a margin.

What is a sensible first Google Ads budget for a law firm?

A sensible first budget can produce roughly 30 to 50 enquiries over two to three months at your expected cost per enquiry. Fewer than that and you cannot tell a weak channel from a slow month. Your own Keyword Planner prices decide the dollar amount.

  1. Pick one or two practice areas and one area. A focused test learns faster.
  2. Estimate cost per enquiry from Keyword Planner ranges and a cautious enquiry rate.
  3. Multiply by the 30 to 50 enquiries you need to judge the test.
  4. Spread it over 8 to 12 weeks. Google can spend up to twice the average daily budget on one day, but not more than the daily average times 30.4 in a month.
  5. Check lawyer capacity. There is no point buying consultations nobody has time to take.
  6. Decide in advance what result means scale, adjust or stop.

The general method is in our Google Ads cost guide.

How does a law firm stop paying for the wrong clicks?

Most wasted legal spend comes from searches that were never clients: job seekers, students, document buyers, people looking for free help the firm does not provide and people outside the area. The search terms report shows the actual searches behind your clicks, and reading it weekly is the cheapest way to lower cost per retained matter.

  • Add negatives weekly, starting from the list in Google Ads keywords for law firms.
  • Pause outside answering hours for call-led campaigns such as criminal defence.
  • Tighten location to people in or regularly in the area you serve.
  • Track retained matters, not just clicks; see call and intake tracking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a click cost for lawyers on Google Ads?

It depends on the city, practice area and month. Google publishes no legal average, so check the top-of-page bid ranges in Keyword Planner for your own keywords.

What is a good monthly Google Ads budget for a law firm?

Enough to produce 30 to 50 enquiries over two to three months at your expected cost per enquiry, and no more than your lawyers can take on.

Why are some legal keywords so expensive?

Many firms bid on the same urgent searches, and a retained matter can be worth thousands in fees. Tight targeting and well-matched pages lower cost per retained file.

Can a law firm run Google Ads on $1,000 a month?

Yes, but expect few clicks in big cities. Use it for one practice area in one area and judge it over several months.

Does Google charge for calls from ads?

Calls from call assets are charged like a click on the ad. Track them as conversions so you can see which calls became consultations.

Should family law get a bigger budget than wills?

Not automatically. Set each ceiling from that practice area's fees per file, consult rate and retain rate.

How do I know if my ads cost too much?

Compare cost per retained matter with the fees on that matter. If it takes a large share, fix targeting and the landing page before raising the budget.
