Google Local Services Ads for Law Firms

Local Services Ads put a verified listing above other results for some legal searches. Google lists Canada and many lawyer categories, but does not publish which categories run in which Canadian cities. This page shows how to check, what verification involves and how to keep the profile compliant.

What are Google Local Services Ads for lawyers?

How are Local Services Ads different from Search ads?

Local Services Ads are a separate Google format for local service businesses, including lawyers. Instead of writing ads and choosing keywords, the firm builds a profile, chooses practice-area categories and service areas, and goes through Google's verification. Google then decides when to show the listing for relevant searches.

Because Google writes the listing from your profile, the profile itself is your ad. Everything on it, from the business name to the lawyer bios, is marketing under your law society's rules.

Search campaigns still matter: they give you control over keywords, wording, landing pages and schedule. See Google Ads for law firms for how the two fit together.

Are Local Services Ads available to Canadian law firms?

Possibly, depending on your city and practice area. Google's getting-started page lists Canada among Local Services Ads countries and lists lawyer categories including bankruptcy, business, contract, criminal, disability, DUI, estate, family, immigration, intellectual property, labour, litigation, malpractice, real estate and traffic. It does not publish which categories run in which Canadian cities.

So the only reliable answer comes from the sign-up flow for your address. Check each practice area separately, because one may be offered where another is not. This guide does not cover personal injury, which Google also lists.

What does a law firm Local Services Ads listing look like?

A listing shows the firm name, practice area, location, hours and reviews, with buttons to call or message. The searcher compares a few firms side by side before choosing one, which makes the profile details do the work an ad headline does in Search.

What verification and screening do lawyers go through?

Google's verification requirements page for the United States lists a licence check for each lawyer, professional liability insurance where required, identity verification for owners and fieldworkers, and background checks for some users. Google does not publish the Canadian requirements on that page, so read them in sign-up.

Google's screening page says screening varies by service and country and covers licence, insurance and background checks. Plan for paperwork per lawyer, not per firm.

ShoutEx rule

Verify first, budget second.

Local Services Ads depend on eligibility and verification you do not control. Treat them as an addition to a working Search campaign, not a replacement, until your own account shows results.

How do you keep a Local Services Ads profile compliant?

Treat the profile like any other marketing. Use the firm's real name, list only practice areas your lawyers can currently perform competently, describe experience only where it is demonstrably true and identify everyone as a lawyer or paralegal.

  • No superlatives in the business description: no best, leading, top or premier.
  • No "specialist" or "expert" unless certified; describe a restricted practice instead.
  • Reviews: ask every client the same way, never offer incentives and never write or edit reviews. Alberta's guidance calls manipulated ratings misleading.
  • Review replies: never confirm that the reviewer is a client; see reviews for law firms.
  • Categories: choose only practice areas you take, so you do not pay for leads you will refer out.

This is not legal or ethics advice; check your law society. See marketing rules by province.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Local Services Ads available for lawyers in Canada?

Google lists Canada among LSA countries and lists many lawyer categories, but does not publish which run in which Canadian cities. Check your address and each practice area in sign-up.

Which practice areas can use Local Services Ads?

Google's getting-started page lists lawyer categories including family, criminal, immigration, real estate, estate, business, contract, labour and litigation. Availability varies by location.

What verification do lawyers need for Local Services Ads?

Google's US page lists licence checks for each lawyer, liability insurance where required, identity verification and background checks for some users. Canadian requirements are shown in sign-up.

Do I need a website for Local Services Ads?

The listing is built from your profile and clients usually call or message directly. A good website still helps clients who check you before calling.

Can I say "best family lawyer" in my LSA profile?

No. The profile is marketing, so the same law society rules apply: no superlatives, no unverified rankings and no "specialist" unless certified.

Should I run LSA instead of Search ads?

Usually alongside, not instead. Search ads give you control over wording, pages and tracking. Compare both on cost per retained matter.

How are Local Services Ads charged?

Read the billing and lead rules in the sign-up flow and Google's help pages for your account before setting a budget.
